Guilty by association and insinuation.I don’t think Marek’s buddy gambled on the info, just looked smart on twitter and propped up his business
It’s super dumb of Marek to release any privileged info
Marek was feeding insider info to a buddy who in turn was using that info to make himself appear to be more knowledgable than he really is. That knowledge was used to prop up his private business and, presumably, give him an advantage over other businesses. The NHL didn't like that and they reported Marek and his buddy to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, who conducted an investigation which, presumably, raised red flags for Marek's employer Sportsnet.
I can't comment on the legality of it, but I can say it was incredibly fucking stupidIs any of that illegal? My guess since it was kept quiet it was just a poor look and he got a good severance.
Lots of things are incredibly stupid but don't get people fired... just look at any time colaiacovo opens his mouth.I can't comment on the legality of it, but I can say it was incredibly fucking stupid

It’s a workplace infraction for sure because media people sign agreements on how to handle privileged info granted by league sources as part of broadcast agreements
Did it say how far in advance he gave the info? I haven't been on Twitter in a while but I remember freidman tweeting the selection before it was made several times.Obviously it's not just a dumb thing to do, it was incredibly stupid for the reason below.

I’m no big Jeff Marek fan, but the info provided in that article seems like extremely flimsy justification for firing him.
And it seems as if he went quietly - no wrongful dismissal action?
Dead to rights.
Or was offered the right buy out
