Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

let me ask the expert

How does Ottawa have good stats but a shit overall standings ?

5v5 Shooting % & PDO at the bottom of the league as well

Also PP is near the bottom of the league, PK mid pack according to xG

The thing with PDO is that there's a skill element and a luck element and it's hard to tell one from the other. The shooting % and Sv% issues could be skill driven. Though Ullmark and Forsberg should be an average or better tandem. The lack of goal scoring skill though I could see as being durable. The PP sucks as well, which is usually a sign of mediocre or worst scoring skill so maybe that's just part of their makeup. Purely on eye test I think that's the case, as their top 5 forwards of Stutzle, Brady, Batherson, Giroux, and Norris are good but just good not elite and the rest of their forwards are pretty dogshit for generating offence.

given their offensive talent i'd say there's definitely bad luck in the shooting percentage department.

I'd also guess it's bad luck in the save percentage department, particularly Ullmark, but there's always a chance that they're susceptible to the kind of egregious defensive mistakes that can make defensive xg look better than it really is.

Our goaltending really did get shit, didn't it.

Cam Talbot for Team Canada

Has there been a bigger talent collapse in the history of the game than the collapse of the Quebecois Goaltending Industrial Complex? MAF is 900 yrs old and probably still the best francophone goalie. I never thought I'd see the day.

It’s crazy that there is no Canadian stud goalie. Our best bet was a better rapist than goalie.

But Daccord, Thompson, Talbot is fine.

Daccord is pretty good.

Hockey players weren't raised watching Patrick Roy play for the Montreal Canadiens. A lot of guys I knew (and my brother) became goalies because of Roy. Plus Hockey Québec is shit.

I guess this shouldn’t be surprising. Until Patrick Roy’s first go-round as an NHL head coach back in 2014, you almost never saw a goalie get pulled for the extra attacker outside of the last minute of play.

Now goalies are routinely pulled with minutes left in the game. Sometimes more in the case of multi-goal leads. Quite a big change to the game.

And of course it is no longer the greatest sin in the world to ice the puck so ppl try to hit the open net from their own end

And Patrick Stefan is out of the league. So that helps

Never understood why coaches would pull a goalie looking for a lucky goal/bounce or two to tie a game, but if the other team scored once - they shutter the idea for the rest of the period. I mean, I get that you need to put the goalie back in for the faceoff - but most coaches don't bother to pull him again.

I think the way most coaches do it now makes sense for the most part.

And i kind of like that the empty net points are making the plain raw "total goals/points" stats even more misleading and inaccurate than they already were.

3 on 3 goals do similar. Players who get pond hockey minutes in overtime are going to see inflated scoring totals as well. Draisatl has 3 OT goals already this season, on pace for 11. The points count of course and winning a game is winning the game, but it doesn't tell us a lot about how good a player is performing offensively in regular usage.
