BTW this 4 nations face-off thing is one of the dumbest ideas ever. So if your stars aren't from one of the nations you won't have to worry about them getting hurt.

Yep, why is it so hard for the IIHF to just institute an international calendar like soccer has.
Regular national team games, regular scheduled tournaments etc.

It's tough because with Russia out there's really only 4 competitive nations now. You could throw the Czechs and Germans in to expand it, but this generation of Czech's is really a step down. If Germany could continue pumping out good players and become a legit top hockey nation that would be awesome. Slovakia also completely fell off the map.
Anyway, I don't mind it for a quick international tourney of the top teams. But a strategy for regular, consistent international hockey is a must. The fact that we never got to see end of his prime Sid, prime Nate Mac, and early prime McDavid play together is a crime.

A better question to ask is why is the NHL bothering with these made up, phony baloney tournaments to begin with? These things lost their mojo the minute that the Iron Curtain fell and Russians started coming to the NHL. The best thing about the 72 Summit Series, and the Canada Cups was that 99% of the NHL was made up of Canadians and 0% of it was Russian. But today, your favorite team's star player is as likely to be from Russia or (in the Leafs csse) Arizona than anywhere in Canada and when it comes to fan loyalty, the team comes before the nation.
I don't give a shit whether Canada wins a gold medal in some stupid round robin tournament. I only care about two things: the Habs winning the Cup and the Leafs not winning it.

Rangers in 2006 got massively screwed by injuries at the Olympics and were never the same.

And in this case, some teams will have elite players playing, other team will have none.

Third worst PDO in the league probably has something to do with it. Same reason we'll probably see Washington sink and Edmonton rise later on...
