Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Until he proves his judgment isn't sound

You're having to carry his water really hard already to justify two of the 3 high 1sts he's had to work with....not sure what proof is going to be sufficient for you. I mean, point blank fucking period if there was a re draft of the 22 and 23 drafts, there's a 0% chance Slafkovsky goes 1st and Reinbacher is a squeeze to keep in the top 10 in 2023, nevermind 5th.

There's nothing to justify, it's way too premature to be calling them busts like you are. In one ear and out the other because of the bias in analysis involved.

Yeah, taking a quick look at Gorton's record with high draft picks while running the Rangers, no Gorton led organization should get the benefit of the doubt here.

Especially with Reinbacher btw. Holy fuck already with never even giving the kid a chance.

Never said anything about being a bust. As usual, you have to twist and fuck arguments about to try to make your point. Slaf can turn out to be a decent pro, while still not being the best choice at the 1.

He doesn't have the last say mate. He gives Hughes the rope.

He very well may not be the best choice at 1 but if he turns out to help them win? Who cares? Sometimes I think draft position is looked at way too myopically by fans. I'm good with Cooley being better offensively, no guarantee that happens with the Habs. Seen it time and again.

The bigger problem for the Habs than Slaf over Cooley (which is clearly bad) is getting #1 in 2022 over 2021 (Power) or 2022 (Bedard) or basically any other year ever.
Absolutely agree. Getting first overall in the wrong year sucks. Look at this year, no consensus first overall yet.

It's pretty easy when you have a Matthews or Bedard atop.

I mean, not that he's necessarily better than Bedard, but I feel like Logan Cooley deserves some respect on his name. On pace for a 27 goal, 75 point season as a 20 yr old is pretty, pretty good. Better than what Bedard is doing as a 19 yr old this year, better than Owen Power period, etc.

I'm looking longterm. Cooley deserves respect sure but I can see how Hughes is building this team. He's been shying away from smaller players in the first round since Caufield.

The key for me isn't Slafkovsky, he's going to be what he is, the key is Reinbacher. Blowing out his knee is a concern but until I see him in the league for a couple of years I won't call it a mistake.

In all honesty the Leafs have had three high end scorers that they drafted for years and that doesn't guarantee you anything. Leafs aren't the only ones either. Drafting Cooley and Michkov doesn't mean you're going to the cup.
