Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

Why not?

Even if Michkov came over in five years for Montreal instead of just one like he did for Philly, for some reason…was the plan for the Habs to be in “win-now” mode at some point in the next four seasons?

And even if that was the plan…a teenage defensive defenseman seems like an unlikely candidate to be a difference-maker in that window.
The pretzels used to try to defend this pick are funny.

So Reinbacher is a slug now eh? Care to provide any proof other than opinion?

I have no “proof”. It’s not like I’ve personally scouted the guy.

My opinion is mostly based on his scoring numbers before being drafted. Don’t see how those are in any way indicative of high-end potential.

Kind of like Dim Bumford, the guy the Leafs drafted in the first round last year. Never seen the dude actually play, but I’m still pretty confident in hating that pick based on his numbers. And that wasn’t even a high first rounder.

Never even heard of this stat. Replacing doms scoring system?

Where do you find this?

Net Rating is Doms.

That's the forecast season ending number for them.

In terms of what they've actually done just this season:

Suzuki: 47gms, +5.2, +9.1 pace
Caufield: 47gms, +4.2, +7.3 pace
Cooley: 46gms, +3.1, +5.5 pace
Hutson: 47gms, +2.7, +4.7 pace
Knies: 46gms, +2.2, +3.9 pace
Slafkovsky: 44gms, -0.9, -1.7 pace

Guess time will tell then. From what I've seen, albeit a limited amount of games in preseason and Laval, is that he's smart, already has excellent gap control and is a fluid skater especially for his size. I can see what scouts liked about him. He has tools.

Cooley instead of Slaf would have made the habs look much scarier and complete as a rebuild at this point. That's a big miss.
Cooley hasnt done anything that Slaf hasn't or can't do. I don't see the miss here at all. If the Habs had selected Shane Wright instead of Slaf or Cooley, THAT would have been a big miss.

the simplest one to look at is Net Rating. Cooley's a +6, and that's playing a legit #1C role. That number has continued to tick up since the preseason projection of +2.

Slaf is the only other one from the draft class that isn't a negative, so that's good, but he's a league average +0, which is down from his preseason projection of +3. Hutson for comparison is at +5. The only two habs ahead of Cooley are Suzuki +11 and Caufield +8, but Cooley's +6 ranks higher among centers than Caufield's +8 ranks among wingers. Suzuki and Caufield are pretty much bang on pace with their preseason projections of +10 and +9.

Cooley's on the verge of being a legit quality #1C already, but not quite there. The bottom end of the C rankings:

+8: #29-31 Hintz/O'Reilly/Strome
+7: #32-37 Trocheck/Nelson/Karlsson/Hertl/Jenner/Celebrini
+6: #38-42 Cooley/Zacha/Staal/Danault/Byfield/

though I think Cooley has been bouncing back and forth between +7 and +6 lately.
Cool... so Cooley and Hutson looking great and Slaf has been good for 20-year-olds.

Is Hutson's +5 among dmen worse than Cooley's +6 among centers?

Rate of growth has been, by far, the lowest of all the major north American sports
But here's the thing that business leaders don't seem to get: there is no such thing as infinite or unending growth. At some point, you're as big as you're ever going to get and you need to be satisfied with that rather than continuously messing with your product in the pursuit of growth. Not all growth is good and a lot of it is unsustainable.

But try getting capitalists to accept this. Every fiscal year they only want more.
