Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

(still not buying any of the Caps huge ratings bump this year but that's still kinda awesome to see.)

Since Kaberle was drafted 30 years ago, Morgan Rielly has the most games played for the Leafs of our drafted dman at 844.

Next is Luke Schenn, who we traded at age 22, with 310 games (not counting "The Return").

In 30 years. What the hell are we doing.

It’s funny, after seeing those Sandin stats, I was thinking earlier today about what a longstanding Leaf tradition it is to dump young homegrown defensemen, and what a complete fucking miracle it is how long Kaberle stuck around here.

And it wasn’t from any lack of Leaf fans and the media constantly trying to run him out of town in hypothetical trade packages for being “soft” or not shooting the puck enough.

Still though, those numbers are even more grim that I would’ve guessed.

Yeah, other than Rielly and Kaberle, Stralman might be our best "homegrown" defender, lol.

Looks close on the surface but with 3 massive caveats:

1. That X-Leafs roster would have a caphit around $110m, and that's not even counting a number of expensive contracts that wouldn't make the best lineup.
2. I've forcefit guys into the C spot who aren't actually centers.
3. Counting the likes of Verhaeghe/McCann/Marchment/Rodrigues/Noesen as "X-Leafs" is pretty tenuous and probably incorrect.

remove those not-really-x-leafs and you get a team that's probably close to being cap compliant and looks more like this:

Marchment deserves to be in the x leaf category. We developed him and barely gave him a cup of coffee at the NHL level before trading him.

That one never really made a lick of sense.

Over the course of five seasons, they paid a world-class coach to teach the kid how to skate and patiently developed him from the ECHL to the AHL until he got to the point where he was scoring at a 44 goal pace for the Marlies. Then they give him a whole four games with the Leafs before trading him for 5'9" Geno Malgin. Wtf, Dubas.

And then Verhaeghe's kind of on the opposite end of the spectrum from Marchment, but equally frustrating. They spent a 3rd round pick on him, then watch him put up a couple of 1.25PPG post-draft seasons.

That's not blowing the doors off by any means, but it still merited more than the two-game look the organization gave him with the Marlies before dumping him for nothing to the Islanders to clear up some contract slots.

Since Trade

Necas: 7gms, 2gls, 7pts (COL 4-3-0) - 1 period left in gm7
Rants: 6gms, 1gls, 2pts (CAR 2-3-1)

Eh pretty much every player is having a career year offensively by far and the goalie too.

Everything reeks of unsustainable pdo that might not break this whole year but will eventually.
