I respect it. It’s not like he owes Carolina or any of these new teams trying to acquire him anything, or has any obligation to take less money from them.

And when you’re signing for 7-8 years, there’s no guarantee any team you go to will necessarily be good or a contender for long. May as well get PAID.
 
Most of the nhl is of course at the very least soft maga. Few pay much attention to politics as much as us nerds, but maga is on trend for masculine males in that age bracket.

So yeah, attracting talent may have potentially gotten a touch more difficult for the leafs.

My only problem with players asking for $, is when they inevitably not live up to the expectation, everyone points to the team for signing the player. "Hey it wasn't him who gave himself all this cash. Ask the GM why they signed him".

To me, if you are asking for this much money, you better be prepared to live up to it.
