Around the League 2019-2024 Edition

He got Campbell for Moore and 2 thirds though...

That's kinda really fucking good. If he was Bergevin he would have signed Markstrom or something and he could have easily been tempted to sign one of those tire fire UFA contracts this past offseason. He didn't. And that was smart.
And Clifford!

He did and Campbell was a really good bet to make, but might not be more than a 30-35 game a season guy. It was blindingly obvious that we needed to do something about Freddy last summer. We've got the best group of skaters in Leaf history right now and we're betting our playoff success on Campbell and Rittich when this was really, really foreseeable.

The Leafs should have traded their 1st this year for the best player they could have.

Thats supported by the analytics. Foligno's impact > projected future impact of a 1st to this team competing for a cup.

There was no point in holding on to the pick because you the price tag is slightly more that you wanted to pay. They are trying to win a cup now.

And that ignores that teams are going into this draft blind.

I do agree with all of this, unfortunately. Should've never been in this position.

Hold up hold up. Staal is much worse than Foligno. Just because he was cheaper it doesn't mean he would have been a better addition to the team.

We’ll see.

Both are older guys who’ve had bad seasons this year that may or may not be due to irreversible age-related decline.

But I like Staal’s potential upside (and acquisition cost) a whole lot better than Foligno’s.

Time for me to look up betting odds for Campbell, Jack -- 2021 Conn Smythe Award Winner

I wanted them to replace Freddy in the offseason too. But the only goalie that were legit starting potential upgrade that has actually moved in the last year was Crawford who retired. Khudobin, Kuemper, Lehner didn't move.

The best goalie this year that has changed teams in the last year is Jack Campbell.

Cam Talbot is the only goalie that moved in the offseason that is having a good year, and no one wanted him. Markstrom, Greiss, Holtby, Murray have all been Andersen bad.

Yeah I'm not particularly excited about the Rittich insurance policy but his thinking may be that they now have a diversified portfolio of three legit NHL goalies. They won't be afraid to use any of them come playoff time. I would hope that they aimed higher than Rittich but I don't think anyone better was available.

But he made the best acquisition for a goalie that we've seen in the last few years in Campbell. I don't care how long it takes if he gets the right guy. And he did. Can't complain about that.

Better to keep an expiring Freddy than to get locked into a tire fire 5 year contract for a mediocre to bad goalie. He made the right decision.

did nobody watch the leafs jackets series last year?

Staal is at best a spezza level player right now. A soft usage offensive winger. And has no business playing center anymore.

They're acting like they just acquired another Wayne Simmonds. Bizarre. I fully expect us all to be on board once they see him play.

Yeah, it's not like Dubas has abandoned giving a **** about the draft or anything. I just don't think it's crazy to call a 1st for Foligno an overpay. He's a 3LW of questionable overall impact (based on this year's performance) that we just traded a 1st rounder for.
I'm okay with Foligno the player, but I balk at the acquisition cost. Very much a relic of old school, long pants, truculensity type thinking. Just have to hope it works out.

I just noticed that since their 10-1-2 start, the Bruins are 11-11-4. They have a solid lead over NYR/PHI for the last playoff spot but not an insurmountable one, especially if they don't start winning at a decent clip again. And their blueline is shattered with injuries.

Would be totally unfair but kinda funny to see Hall get the blame for them falling out of a playoffs spot.

I don’t disagree on what you’re saying about Staal.

Which goes to show how little interest I had in acquiring Foligno, I guess.

You know Lehner has been injured this year but above average when he's played, right?

You would seriously rather be in our current position going into the playoffs rather than having Lehner recently back from injury (signed for 4 more years) and Campbell on a heater?

Lehner wasn't going anywhere.

And no, I wouldn't have signed him for 5 years.

The thing about a market is that other GMs in the league dictate the fair value of every asset...now you may disagree and argue that the NHL market is inefficient and overrates old school long pants, but Dubas (or Shanny?) wanted that type of player.

And remember, just last year Julien BriseBois (another successful nerd GM who never played the game) was criticized for overpaying for long pants at the deadline -- and we know how that turned out. Now JB seems to have overpaid for Savard...but let's see what happens.

Could have traded for him at last year's deadline too.

Hard to complain about our goaltending situation if you're not willing to do anything concrete to fix it.
