5K a month for rent or mortgage made me chuckle a bit too....Unless you're in handful of markets, that's a hell of a downtown condo or house in the suburbs. Even if we're talking about Toronto or Vancouver, 5K USD is 6300 CAD. Even after this crazy R.E run up, that's still a hell of a solid condo, walking distance from the rink. Could easily cut that number down significantly in most league markets if you were budget conscience.
Ya but I mean even 6300 rent taking your net take down to 2.5m isn’t preventing you from topping up that tfsa and rrsp contribution and still having another… Cool milly to park in some Investments (with another cool milly left over to really live the high life).
I get the point that players don't take away as much as their total contract value, but that is a message for players to spend wisely not fans to feel bad for them.
Yup. The issues for most players is not that they don't make enough money. It's that they spend as if the money will roll in forever. And it's easy to fall into that trap. But you have to remember that for many, your career will be short and you'll be unemployed with 0 life skills at 30-35 and career take-home earnings of $1-3 million. So saving up, as hard as it may be for some, is the most important thing you can do for any athlete.
I think his goal was, and this is where the cap has come in and been a disaster for the players, is letting people know expenses. A lot of fans know know cap hits and don't know a players' stats.
Most hockey players come from families that live that same lifestyle, and whose parents paid similar player expenses for a solid 10 years pre-draft. So talking about new cars and exotic vacations doesn't sound like the high life.
