Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Of course Toronto will pay 8X15. There’s no issue about TML or any other team paying 7X15.

The real issue, I think, is where does he want to play? And with whom? Apart from his family/agent, he’s probably also watched how LeBron has carried himself over the years. i.e., He has market power, he has an entourage or peeps from the USNDT, etc. It’s a potential wildcard.
Exactly , its all about WTF does 34 want to do for his next payday

Money is the least factor IMO

I’m
They are too fucked right now with their poker chips all in

They will always be in cap hell with 4 players eating almost half their cap
So double down on a losing strategy? You give 15 to Matthews, then Marner ask for the same and you have 36% of your cap on 2 players? Can’t work. Same reason why super paid QBs don’t win Super Bowls.

I hear you GW

I would of started ripping the core apart after losing to the Habs

However the union needs to raise the ceiling on the elite

Every other big 3 sport has max salaries much higher

The revenues are not the same , but the % of payouts are not close

Eventually the middle class will get crucified

You don't pass on Bedard because you're worried about his contact in several years. I mean come on.

No way I’m passing on him, but I’m also not losing sleep over not getting him. Ever since teams lost cost control over those players after the entry contract (thanks Matthews and McDavid), they lost some of their value.

McDavid is making 15% of cap space. Brady has the highest SB win cap % at 12.61.

It’s a team sport. You either care about winning or money, but it can’t be both.

That being said I went on a rabbit hole yesterday of looking at 1st overall picks successes and it's surprisingly not that great. Besides a outlying stretch from 2003 to 2008 where all 1st picks won the Cup (although Johnson was with Colorado), also the era of cap circumventing deals, the only others that won the Cup with the teams that drafted them are:

McKinnon
Lecavalier
Modano
Lemieux
Potvin
Lafleur
Houle

The answer there is first overalls tend to go to really bad teams.
