Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Houston calling…

Actually that wouldn't be the best move for the league. A team that relocates costs way less than an expansion franchise. The league would rather have Houston pay the expansion fee than the relocation fee.

This is the point at which Pierre-Karl Peladeau needs to shit or get off the pot. He will never have a better opportunity to get a team for Quebec City relatively cheaply. Unlike an expansion franchise which is awarded years in advance in order to allow for arena construction, etc. the Coyotes are an existing franchise that needs a place to call home right now. Quebec has an NHL-ready arena, and an NHL-ready fan base. You could literally move the Yotes there tomorrow and all you'd need to do is stitch up some Nordiques jerseys for the players. Everything is already done. It's just plug-n-play.

They'll never get a better shot than right now.

It’s not the fans it’s all about bu$ine$$… fans showing up for pro sporting events is simply cherry on top for profits.

It’s about consistent corporate $ and ability to grow non sport related business ventures, using land / arena as borrowing leverage.

Winter-peg never gets a team of David Thomson doesn’t step up and say he wants a team. Now, if Desmarais were to say he wants a team in Quebec, Jacobs, Anschutz et al would instantaneously approve a team…. but that ain’t happening w PKP
The reason Winnipeg got the Jets back is because they were there, ready to go, with an (albeit somewhat small) arena and a fan base. When you move an existing team you need to be able to move them today, not 4 years from today, so it becomes an "any port in a storm" scenario. That's literally the only way Quebec could hope to get or could afford to get a team. They can't digest an expansion fee of close to a billion US.

We have a team with players and employees and a league schedule to get scheduled in time for this fall. Beggars can't be choosy. They need a place to land asap and Quebec has everything already in place. Houston is, of course, a more desirable market for a team but the league isn't going to waste an opportunity to max out on an expansion fee. They need a quick and easy solution to this problem and Quebec City ticks all the boxes, provided, of course, that any potential ownership group there has actual money and isn't just bullshitting.

But this is the time to strike.

Doesnt matter late in the first , second or other rounds

No reason why you cant have bottom 6 or depth ready to play in the minors
Bottom 6 depth ready is easy, but quality ones that can outplay the other team is not. There is a reason why teams are paying those prices for bottom 6 players at the deadline. To think that a team can consistently pump up those 1 or 2 or those guys every year is crazy.

I'm of two opinions for Houston...

If they have plans on expansion, moving the Coyotes to Houston would be a cataclysmic fuck-up. I don't think there's another market in North America (that doesn't have a team already) that has more money available than Houston. That's why I'm more of the opinion that moving the team to Kansas City makes more sense. Moving them to Quebec makes even more sense, but we all know they're never going back there.

However, if they're not going to expand further, Houston seems to be the logical choice.

I agree, moving Yotes to KC and allowing expansion in Houston & Atl is likely the next steps

Kansas City's an underrated sports town. It's not a coincidence they're getting World Cup games when the tournament comes to North America.

They'll also be the only sports show during the week, similar to Pittsburgh. I think there's a possibility they could become the Pittsburgh of the mid-west. The similarities between the two cities is pretty remarkable.

Probably a good city, just tired of hockey expanding to non-traditional markets.
