Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

Maybe fluke wasn't the best word but underdog cups with luck. Especially in 93 with the OT wins.
They were also made possible by a playoff format that didn't involve re-seeding after each round. Both the 86 and 93 Habs won in part not because of who they beat, but because of who they didn't have to beat. In 86 they didn't have to beat Quebec, Philly or Edmonton. They got lucky by only having to beat lesser teams (Whalers, Rangers, Flames) In 93 they didn't have to beat Boston or Pittsburgh. They got Buffalo and the Islanders instead and went 8-1 against them.

86 w Steve Smith scoring into his own net..
And Hartford upsetting the Nordiques and the Rangers fluking their way into the conference finals instead of Philly, who went to the Cup finals the year before and the year after (beating us in the process)

As soon as I saw Smith pull that boner I knew we were winning the Cup.

Meh, 1986, Flames beat Oilers in 7 games and we killed them in 5 in the finals. We only lost 5 games in the playoffs that year, 3 against Hartford.
1993, Islanders beat Penguins in 7 and we torched them in 5. We went 16-2 after dropping our first 2 games against the Nordiques.

Fluke my ass.

They took us out the season before. It was not a sure thing. Besides which, we damn near lost to the Whalers. If we had to play Philly right after going 7 games plus OT to beat the Whalers we probably don't get to the final that season.
we also had beaten them in 84 and did in 87

in any event, it is like the Packers 1996 SB where they only won because we lost to Carolina as we owned Favre's ass
