For someone that was considered ''finished'', he sure found a way to build around Crosby-Malkin and get 2 more Cups....people criticized the move when Lemieux hired him, but i guess Mario knows what he's doing

He had Crosby and Malkin in their prime years. ‘Nuff said. But yeah, he made some good moves earlier in his tenure there. He was definitely not afraid to pull the trigger.

Prior his hire, Crosby and Malkin in their prime failed to reach the finals the 5 previous years.

McDavid and Draisatl in their prime are going nowhere in Edmonton.

Point is, elite players help but you still need to build a team around them.

Rutherford did his job. Grab hardware while their elite players were in their prime. Can't knock him for having to pay to do it. Now the bill comes due.

McGuire has repeatedly stated for a couple of years now, as long as Crosby & Malkin are able to play Mario will not allow a rebuild / retool whatever you want to call it.

So let me speculate, Rutherford probably wanted to retool on the fly
