Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

He’s making 20X the individual average earnings in Canada, and for at least for two years. If he can’t manage to get an incredible head start in life compared to his age peers, I don’t know what to say. Most people his age are trying to lose student debt or scraping together a minimum down payment on house that take 20+ years to pay off.

He’s very, very fortunate.
He’s one of 750’ish best hockey players. Top professionals all earn well that’s the reality of life

How much does the avg C-Suite exec of a publicly traded company earn relative to an avg person?

As Waz said blame the interviewer who asked “what with taxes in Quebec”…

Oh & BTW - Pezzetta clearly stated “I’m very grateful for what I make”

Most US locales have significantly cheaper housing than Mtl does presently, especially many of the southern US markets - cost of living in Canada is significantly higher even when adjusted for foreign exchange.

Oh yeah, I don’t expect Pezzetta to have a 10-12 yr NHL career, so $750K for a few years in his early 20s won’t carry him for the next 60yrs of his life, since he’s unlikely to start working as a neurosurgeon once his playing days are over…
Pezz doesn't need to own a house in Montreal unless he plans to live there after his playing days are over. Since he isnt a native Montrealais I doubt he's going to stick around so the cost of housing is irrelevant. He can lease a pad in one of the condos next to the Bell Centre or one next to Place Bell in Laval. He doesn't need to own real estate there.

Nothing wrong with what he said. First, he was answering a question. Second he acknowledged that it was still a lot of money. But he’s got what, a 3-5 years NHL career? It’s a decent head start but it’s not like he’s set for life.
So he can't retire at 30 and will have to get a job. Boo fucking hoo.

I applaud Pezzetta for just saying what most athletes are privately thinking, i.e, forking over hundreds of thousands and in the case of someone like Suzuki, millions of dollars to the government must be incredibly frustrating. Especially when at least 50% of government spending is waste.
fixed

When you earn $750K the government isn't supposed to work for you. You work for it so that your fellow citizens who don't make as much as you don't have to struggle as much. This is the fundamental concept which has been lost over the years as taxes on 1%ers have kept being reduced and the financial burden that should belong to them gets offloaded on to the rest of us.

Yup I know accredited investors who barely pay 15% a year

I was in a charity golf tournament last year with a former NHLer

He made 10 mil over his career and he said he has put away enough money to last him a lifetime

He never got into the bling bling life , decent house , cars and lives comfortably
Pezz won't go to the HHOF without buying a ticket and likely won't play 10 years at the NHL level, although with expansion who knows. But he's already well on his way to a decade long "pro" career (NHL and AHL. They pay you hundreds of thousands in the AHL too) and so long as he's healthy enough to play he can have a long career (maybe not here but at least in Europe) and retire with a nice stack of cash.

With stars taking more money these days , cheap fourth liners will always have a job

Pezz will definitely stick somewhere for a decade

He went on a jock podcast and joked about the high taxes in a non-complaining way, kind of like joking about cold Montreal winters in a non-complaning way. No big deal.

you make under 100000 in the AHL

Never had an issue paying taxes to help the less fortunate and provide healthcare, etc, but giving money to people that can work but don’t want to, and then laugh in my face for being stupid for working, always left a bad taste in my mouth. Grew up with a couple of kids from a decent middle class family whose aspiration in life as a kid was to be on welfare. That’s when I realized that something in the system was broken.

Thanks Trudope

why are you jealous of those who make more? Believe me, 750000 doesn't go as far as it used to go.
It's not jealousy, it's having the self awareness required to know what is worth complaining about and what isn't. NO professional athlete has any right to complain about the high cost of living. None. And "$750K doesn't go as far as it used to" is a tone-deaf thing to say. $750K/year goes more than far enough for 99% of people on this planet. Pezz isn't clipping coupons and buying his clothes at Value Village.

I'm not jealous of Pezz's success. I'm happy for him. Get as much as you can while you can. But you need to pay your fair share of taxes too. Because if 50% of that $750K gets taxed guess what? You're still pocketing $375K for the year which means you're still richer than most. And with a decent accountant you can get off much easier than 50%.

So again, I'm not jealous. I'm just annoyed that people can say things like a $750,000 annual salary "doesn't go very far" with a straight face and not blink when a pair of sneakers have a $200 price tag on them. These are the epitome of first world problems. Half the world has to dig a hole in which to shit because they don't have indoor plumbing and we're here debating the relative merits of one trim package on our pickup trucks over another.

People who have practically everything need to stop bitching about how "hard" their lives are and about the things they still don't have. They just need to pay their fair share of taxes, count their blessings, and STFU.

because as usual, in Canada, people hate those who make $$. Guys like Wehave support workers and crap on biz owners until it is a hockey player then said worker should shut his piehole or work at Shake Shack
They can't work at Shake Shack because we don't have Shake Shack in Canada.

Because we're so hard done by, I guess.

But yes, a lot of players, were they not gifted athletes, would be lucky to get a job pumping gas or flipping burgers. Those guys need to count their blessings and save their shekels for a rainy day because they're one blown knee ligament from having to return to the real world.

At least attractive but washed up female athletes can always work the pole or do OnlyFans. But nobody wants to know what a ginger mullet like Pezz looks like naked.

My bigger issue is that people who live almost entirely off of passive/investment income pay far less in taxes as a proportion of their income than people whose income is primarily from "working." That seems very inequitable to me.
