Around The League - 2024-25 Regular Season

As I always say, scouting Dir should be purged after 5-years, it’s purely a game of recency bias - who do I know in the right places at the right time and once they move I become ineffective as history has clearly shown over last 25+ years

Al Murray had a very good first 4-years (2011-2015), he had been scouting Point & Cirelli from their early teens for Hockey Canada as Scouting Dir after being let go by LAK, and had inside info when he joined TBay. Once he lost those contacts who had moved on, he became ineffective (2016-2022)

You need picks to be effective , team traded most of their draft capital for cup runs

That's why there should often be "roster" turnover when it comes to scouts.

I find it very odd that we have the same two Quebec scouts since... who the fuck knows when. Serge Boisvert's been around for almost 15 years. Donald Audette's been around for nearly a decade, mostly as a part-time scout.

Jim Bennings father (Elmer) was Habs scout for how long 45-years?

Still not sure what they’re doing since we barely ever pick guys from the Q.

Not draft picks, who cares about the fodder they threw darts at in the later rounds.

But yes, there should be more focus on their backyard.

It’s all Russia and the Q get, late rounds fodders.
That's more to the point I believe. Even when apparent solid prospects from either are available they pass over them.

I can't find out who the real issue is with but it's above GM and I assume it's Molson but where does he get his marching orders?

What is going on with the Q, only 12 players drafted in 2023 compared to 35 from the OHL and 33 from WHL
Same thing that's been going on for 40 years. The Q is the least regarded junior league out of the 3 and pretty much always has been. The WHL and OHL teams do better at developing future NHL players. The Q has always been focused on making "vedettes de chez nous" who will drive ticket sales. They are always willing to sacrifice development in order to promote star players. The only reason why the Q hasn't fallen even further behind is because they have expanded into English speaking Atlantic Canada and the US where there is no cultural or linguistic inferiority complex among the fans for teams to exploit. When a team that has a star player shifts its entire game plan so that the star player can pad his stats at the expense of the other 19 guys on the team, you only wind up developing that one star and NHL scouts who aren't dumb begin to discount the gaudy numbers. 50 goals in the Q is equal to 40 goals in the OHL or the Dub. They are simply tougher leagues to play in. Playing in them is more NHL-like than whatever you experience in the Q. The disparity isn't as bad today as it was 20 or 30 years ago, but the Q still isn't regarded as being quite on par with the other 2 junior leagues.

I think Roy will make it for us and kidney has a good shot too. That was a good Q year to draft.

Yeah that was the 2021 draft. Even Trudeau had a good year in Laval even though he's still a long shot, especially given how crowded the org is with LHD.

And even though it was a bad year for the Q, there are still media types that bemoan the fact that we only took one player from the Q.
