Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

The 3 core Leafs playoff careers in G5-7:

Matthews - 19 gp, 416.87 mins of TOI, 8 goals, 13 pts, 1.15 G/60, 1.87 pts/60

Nylander - 21 gp, 398.49 mins of TOI, 7 goals, 17 pts, 1.05 G/60, 2.56 pts/60

Marner - 21 gp, 465.70 mins of TOI, 1 goal, 9 pts, 0.13 G/60, 1.16 pts/60

It's a stunning statistic really. Mitch was very good early in the series last year tho. Arguably their best offensive player.

You need to add at least two pretty good defensemen and a 2C right? And a goaltender?

Quite a to do list for Tree.

Yeah...it's a hell of a summer for a good GM and he's not a good GM.

Goalie should be relatively easy though. The Bruins are over a barrel with Ullmark and it's only a 1 yr commitment. Nashville kind of similar with Saros. D should be pretty easy as well as long as sufficient cap space is cleared. The exact type of defenders we need are available in free agency. Just pay.

2C is a concern though. Might be one of those things where you just sign Domi to a team friendly multi year deal, go get an actual matchup 3C and live with Domi as 2C until the deadline. Only UFA alternative imo is Elias Lindholm who looks like he's in the middle of repairing his stock in the playoffs with Vancouver.

There will be big market teams interested in Mitch. He would basically have his choice of where he wanted to live.

Tavares though would probably do Utah. Fuck, he might be a mormon already.

Mitch to LAK for Byfield + Clarke
Tavares to Utah for Crouse + Shea Weber's corpse.

With a ton of cap left and some trade assets to go get your 1A goalie, 2 defenders, etc, etc.
That looks way worse than what we have now. No thanks.

for the record, Seth Jones did end up looking non-disastrous on the most recent update of Dom's Net Ratings (+4), the one that did the most rigorous QoC adjustments yet.

Only the impressive young Vlasic ended up with a better Net Rating on the hawks last year (+6), and of course Seth had a much bigger and tougher role than him.

and in general, you'd guess that the Net Rating would improve for this type of heavy usage guy when moving to a much better team.

Seth Jones feels too obvious. When it comes to Tre, he loves the obvious basic move. Chicago gets their new showtime, Leafs get their top pair d. Everyone goes home happy!

It should look worse, it's 35 million under the cap

If it looked like this instead:

Bertuzzi-Matthews-Crouse
Robertson-Lindholm-Nylander
Knies-Byfield-McMann
XXXXX-Holmberg-XXXXX

Skjei-Roy/Walker
Rielly-McCabe
Benoit-Lilly

Saros/Ullmark (Give up a 1st if you have to)
Woll

I'd argue it looks better and deeper than what we ran out there last year by a fair bit, especially the blueline and that's still ~3 million under. Shit you might be able to upgrade Bertuzzi into Guentzel there.

To make it even funnier—if you add his scoring in the Memorial Cup tournament to his OHL playoff totals that year…

…he had 58 points in 22 games. A 216-point pace.

Just the Leafiest-as-fuck possible outcome that he did that, then went on to become one of the most legendary playoff chokers in franchise history.
Or not, under a coach not named Keefe.

The model still has Seth with negative 4M value

Would be a tough ask to get Chicago to retain on Seth with so many years left. But it's probably the only way I'd consider acquiring him.

Can Cowan make this team out of camp, I'm curious.

Still pretty young but boy has he been good this year and looked fairly good last camp.
