Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

That would be kind of a fucking disaster tho...
Yeah, but maybe the alternatives are worse. What if the choices are:

1. Trade Marner now for pennies on the dollar
2. Extend Marner at Matthews+ money
3. Keep Marner for 2024-25 and let him go as a FA.

I agree if there’s a Byfield ++ type of deal out there, it’s better than all of the above. Just not sure whether that’s possible, given all the things that need to line up including another team being willing to give up decent assets AND meet Marner’s extension price.

those are Knies/Robby numbers.

Those are Robbie's 22 yr old numbers, and Knies numbers playing on a line with Matthews and Mitch for most of the year. Kopitar & Kempe are pretty good, but they're not that good.

And this is a 21 yr old 6'5 220 pound kid who is really likely going to end up back at centre.

As for Byfield, most of the talk centered around (no pun intended) his likely move back to the middle. As we wrote about last week, all signs point to Byfield back to center next season.

“I’m open to anything; wherever I can play and contribute the most, that’s where I want to be. Ultimately, I do want to be a centerman again. Hopefully in the future, I can do that,” said Byfield. “I’ve played that my whole life growing up, so whenever I can go back to that, I feel pretty comfortable in that.”

Also already has sexy nerdies in actually difficult usage. 55.6% xG and the Kopitar line does all the lifting for LAK. Byfield actually leads the team in defensive zone starts per 60.

There's risk inherent in any young player developing. But if you're looking for a player type to aim for, it's a monster, mobile 2 way centreman who might just end up elite at everything.

Yeah he's at that age and point in his career where his organization is gonna be way too smitten and emotionally attached to him to trade him for anything. Not saying Mitch isn't superior, but historically teams slobber over home grown guys like Byfield. It'll be tough to get them to let go.

55 pt guy. I mean nice breakout but marner doubles that up.

All this talk about trading away good players.

Ditch the deadweight (kampf/krok/reaves) and we have over $22m in capspace to fill in this roster:

Knies - Matthews - Marner
McMann - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - XXXXX - XXXXX
XXXXX - Holmberg - XXXXX

Rielly - McCabe
XXXXX - Liljegren
Benoit - Timmins

Woll
If you don't like guys like Lilly and Timmins then drop them and add another $3m to the kitty.
With a good number of near NHL-ready depth youth:

Tverberg 22 - Minten 20 - Grebenkin 21
(Cowan 19)

Webber 23 - Niemela 22
Kokkonen 23 - Villeneuve 22
(Chadwick 19)

Hildeby 23
Akhtyamov 23
Peksa 22

obviously ditching Tavares money is ideal but we have lots of capspace to play with in a pretty deep UFA market. enough for 4 good to very good UFA.

Oh that’s an airtight argument.
When we're talking about 21-year-old kids, yeah it is. Also Faber's reputation prior to this season (to my knowledge, anyway) was a rock solid top 4 d-prospect with great intangibles but questionable offensive ability.

Now he had an amazing season this year and his stock is way up. Smart trade for Minny, absolutely. But prior to the trade he had 14 points in 27 games, 12 points in 32 games, and 12 points in 38 games at the University of Minnesota. Not exactly an offensive juggernaut. Compared to that point in his career, Byfield and Clarke are WAY better prospects and it's not particularly close.

moving back to C just like Willy every year.

Slaf was a #1, would you trade Marner for him?
I wouldn't, but his pedigree is the main reason why anyone would consider it. When you combine that with him appearing to break out this year, if they offered him and Hutson for one year of Marner, I would have to consider it, yeah.

This sort of deal kind of depends on how much pressure there is on the Kings to start showing something.

They have been the cat's pajamas for a few years now with nothing to show for it and if they expectations for results are starting to creep into that front office then trading futures for a known entity in Marner may be on the table.

Same kind of philosophy for any team with a good crop of D who have trouble scoring

Fwiw, here's the list of every forward in their 21 yr old season (or younger) with 700 5v5 minutes or more and a 2.00 P/60 or higher this past season.

Wyatt Johnston
Stutzle
Peterka
Jarvis
Byfield
Fantilli

I'll let you guess how big the list gets when you include, let's say 17-18 Dzone faceoffs per 60, with an above water xG

And hence why he was drafted 2nd overall. These guys are unicorns (when they don’t disappoint which is quite often)

Marner is great but LA is loathe to open up a big hole at C, not when they have Fiala and Kempe at the wings as interesting trade bait

Yup

Just spitballing on rough value today. For entertainment purposes only.

The LAK question is whether or not they're trying to win while they have Kopitar and Doughty still making big contributions or whether they're cool with making the playoffs while this generation rides off into the sunset. The Byfield I think he'll end up is a nice Kopitar replacement, but he won't be that in time to be a Kopitar compliment.

If you're trying to squeeze one more out of some club legends, sometimes you have to gamble.

Something we can't lose sight of is that we're not the only team in the league with questions, mixtures of internal and external pressures, drama, etc. It's just the loudest here.
