Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

So do it on the other side of the ice.

The other team gets a vote and they want your boy to get the puck on the halfboards because they know he'll stop (because he's not out skating anyone) and turn it over.

So they'll structure their entry D to push the play towards the Matthews-Tavares left handed shot side of the equation and away from Mitch-Willy. The adjustment is to catch them standing up the blueline by getting the puck behind them and beating them to it but lol, Tavares isn't exactly a forechecker to be worried about. The adjustment is to swap out the guy who can't be part of the entry package for someone who can.

A locked defensive strategy like that is easily unlocked by just not running the same play every time. If they know it's coming, they know what to do in advance. Do something different and they have to adapt. And no, they didn't load up the other side of the ice to prevent passes from going to anyone else, which we know because three guys descended on Tavares immediately each time, which they can't do if they're busy blocking off Marner/Nylander on the other side and making it impossible to get the puck to them on entry.

Tavares should have no part in the entry. I don't think he ever did until this season. It was some new thing Keefe got addicted to, and he couldn't shake it all the way up to the bitter end.

I like that your plan for your boy to score his 30 is that he should always be given the prime spots on the ice for scoring the easiest goals, and should not be required to be involved in zone entries or transition play in general.

And PP zone entries aren't quite so easy if the other team knows your robot "has no part in the entry." Tough to utilize your man advantage when only four guys are allowed to touch the puck above the hashmarks. Maybe a guy you have to bend over backwards to shelter like that shouldn't be on PP1?

Being in front of the net is the place to get easy goals? He gets all the punishment and if deflecting and jamming home rebounds was so easy we’d have had another guy since Andreychuk who’d have done it as well.

It’s not sheltering to just not do that same dumb zone entry every single time.

I’m not for proactively trying to trade Lilly because he has some upside and he’ll be relatively cheap but he’s far from untouchable. Other than one stretch this year and last when rielly was out he’s been flat out bad whenever they have expanded his role or leaned on him.

I really worry how good he's looked everytime he's given he most minutes. His next team he'll hop right into a top 4 role.

I like Lilly and would happily keep him but it is hard to pencil him into our top 4 for next year. You’d have hoped he’d established himself by now.

I wouldn’t give him away though.
while I agree that you would hope he would have established himself by now, I'd also argue he hasn't really been given much in the way of legitimate opportunities to do so.

he gets bumped up the lineup as an injury fill in, excels, and then is relegated back to the bottom pair or press box. and yes I know his playoff performances have been poopy two years in a row.

Yeah but when he has been bumped down/they add competition he gets the yips rather than continues to shine. he has some responsibility there.

while fair, I'd like to see how he performs under not Sheldon before concluding this is a defect inherent to Timmy. if he continues to wilt, then yeah, that's a problem. I'm just not convinced that Shelly wasn't fucking with his head the whole time.

He was straight up unplayable for the last two years from about March onwards. Not just bad, unplayable. That's a red flag no matter who the coach is or what the situation is.

In a perfect world, I agree, I want to see what he looks like in a more uptempo transition-based system that doesn't reward slug d. But that's still no excuse for looking as bad he has looked when things get a little uncomfortable for him.

It was time for a new voice but queef is far from a bad coach. The team performed under him. I don’t think you can pin Lilly’s melting act on him.

I'm a lot more worried about Rielly than a supporting cast member like Liljegren. already can't defend and 6 years left on a big extension? cool, cool, cool.

"sheltering" is probably an inadequate term for what Treliving and Berube have to do here
