Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

Opening Day Lineup Last Year

Bertuzzi --- Matthews --- Marner
Domi --- Tavares --- Nylander
Knies --- Minten --- Jarnkrok
Gregor --- Kampf --- Reaves

Rielly --- Brodie
McCabe --- Klingberg
Giordano --- Liljegren

Samsonov
Woll

And let's not forget how laughably terrible that 4th line and 2nd pairing were. Not to mention that top pair scuffled all year thanks to Brodie falling apart.

and Minten only lasted 4gms. Lineup by game 5:

Bertuzzi --- Matthews --- Marner
Knies --- Tavares --- Nylander
Domi --- Kampf --- Jarnkrok
Gregor --- Holmberg --- Reaves

Rielly --- Brodie
McCabe --- Liljegren
Giordano --- Klingberg

Potential Game 1 lineup This year:

Domi --- Matthews --- Marner
Knies --- Tavares --- Nylander
McMann --- Holmberg --- Robertson
Dewar --- Kampf --- Jarnkrok

Rielly --- Tanev
McCabe --- Liljegren
OEL --- Benoit/Hakanpaa

D is clearly improved, but the forwards are only arguably marginally better. He needs to bring an upgrade to that bottom 6 and push Kampf out. Way out.

Maybe the plan is to see if Cowan and Minty can stick in camp and only then push the vets out.

big thing is whether Berube treats Reaves like a regular or not. would be a huge upgrade if he was simply on the outside looking in from the start.

The D is significantly better, though just like the last version age is a red flag that they will run into at some point.

The G should be better, but getting 82 games + out of those two is also a question mark.

The forwards will do what they do. The big thing is can Berbue get them to score in the playoffs.

This season essentially comes down to was the problem Keefe or the Core 4.

Yup, which is a question that should’ve been answered last year.

Burned a year for nothing under fatty.

oh wait i used the year end numbers for tanev and oel, not their playoffs previews numbers.

That goes down to +5 for Tanev and -2 for OEL, so the net for the two dmen change is +16 not +26.

so we actually had a nerdy approved offseason, so far. but the emotional side of my brain keeps beating the logical one in terms of my outlook for next season.

And to be clear, I like our goaltending and am giving them the benefit of the doubt that its an improvement. But neither guy has played 30 games, so it is a question mark.

good thing we have Matt Murray in reserve!
Hildeby is 23. I have some hopes he'll be just fine giving them 5-10 games this year. This ain't some kid anymore. I don't really have many concerns with their goaltending.

They have an upgrade on Samsonov, an upgrade on last year's hildeby (i.e. older, no longer a rookie), an older more mature Woll, and the Matt Murray x-factor. Only loss is Martin Jones. Hildeby/Murray can replace the mammoth known as Marty Jones.

No idea why we didn’t even give him one game last year, cmon.
