Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

The nice part about McClellan is that he looks like an older Keefe so the adjustment won't be too much for LOF to handle. The bad part is that he's a worse coach than Keefe and I'm not sure it's particularly close.

So there are pros and cons for sure.

Let’s go through McClelland’s qualifications:

  • Babcock disciple/ex-assistant

  • Coached the worst playoff choking team in modern NHL history (prior to the Shanahan Leafs, at least) through seven of their failed playoff runs

  • Followed that up with three full seasons with the McDavid Oilers where he missed the playoffs twice, lost in the second round once and got fired partway through his fourth season.

  • After that, coached the Kings for four full seasons where he missed the playoffs twice, lost in the first round twice and got fired partway through his fifth season.


So…yeah. Following the pattern from Shanny’s last GM search where against all logic and sense they hired the biggest loser with the most senior membership in the old boys club who’s available on the market, McClellan is 100% the guy they’re hiring.
 
Sheldon had Boucher. Not uncommon for former HCs to pad their resume with an assistant gig

Hard to look at the rosters he had in Edmonton and LA and then argue he should have gotten much more out of them either.

That's not an endorsement of him for coach, but I don't buy this "it could be way worse" narrative re: Sheldon. The dude literally put his 4th line on the ice, which included Noah Gregor immediately after we scored the go ahead goal in the 3rd period of game 7...and he had been doing similar shit all year and got regularly burned for it.

This is not a "lol, you're overplaying a top 3 shutdown centre in hockey trying to defend a lead against the Rangers" or "lol, you got to the finals just to watch Thornton and Marleau choke" kind of situation. Call me when we look at one of these coaching resumes and it includes "trusted David Kampf and Ilya Samsonov with the season"
 
Definitely a great sign that the kings flourished as soon as they got rid of him. He's shit. And has habits as bad as, if not worse than Keefe did. Let's stop acting like Keefe is the worst coach in NHL history. He's bad but you could do worse.
 
Im not sure ive seen such an unimpressive resume for a NHL coach that is as long as McClellan's

Like seriously, he accomplished literally nothing in at least 2 prime spots to do something, and even LAK was on the come when he was hired there.
