Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

I honestly think it just comes down to needing at least one of 1) great goaltending or 2) great special teams and if you get neither you're not going far in the playoffs and that's usually us.

Looking that way yes. And the degree of which your PP and Special teams need to be good depends on how you are doing 5v5. Oilers for instance are struggling there and on goaltending, so their PP needs to be out of this world.

But being amazing at 5v5 isn't enough. Your Goalie and special teams will win or lose games for you.

And we aren't exactly trying hard to improve those areas. Our #1 want is "Grit".

My main fear with Tre is that we're still going to end up with a blueline full of big lugs who can't move the puck and will accept a shitty deal for Marner and... still have second best goaltending and special teams next year and also struggle more to score 5 on 5.

"Craig, will Liljegren be your Vince Dunn and will you push him off the roster and get him traded for pennies on the dollar?"

Yes.

"You're hired!"

But nah I won't shit talk too much. Berube is fine and infinitely better than McLellan. All the guys available are about the same other than Todd. Underwhelming but not disastrous.

I’m good with Montour and Pesce, although my guess is they will probably be two of the higher paid July 1 players due to name value.

Think guys like Skjei and Walker will come cheaper than Montour, and Roy, Tanev cheaper than Pesce, and the former are just as good if not better.

These playoffs are so eye opening and core 4 should take notice (well management should)

1- Bad goalie performance? No problems, stars show up on the scoresheet.

2- Nothing from the bottom two lines? No problem, stars show up on the scoresheet

3- Hot opponent goalie? No problem, stars show up on the scoresheet

4- Tough, or even unexpected loss? No problem, the stars show up on the scoresheet big next game

5- Bad 5 on 5 performance? No problem, the stars show up on the scoresheet on the PP

6- Top goalies hurt? No problem, the stars show up.

7- Reffing going against you? No problem, the stars still show up.

Yes lots of losses still but the stars show up regardless. Basically every excuse that we have given to Matthews, Marner, and Tavares has been shown to be just that. Excuses.

I mean yes, but also every team doing well in the second round is getting offense from their bottom 2 lines and D too.

I don't get the Dunn thing. In his last year in St. Louis he played 20 mins a game and scored at approx a 40 point pace, then their way overrated GM exposed him in the expansion draft to protect Faulk and Krug.

If anyone has a nerdies run down for Berube's St Louis teams, it'd be most welcome.

Zeke did it a few pages back.

We need a point shot threat for the PP...and since we need D anyways Tre has to do this.
You have some mostly Offense defenders who could play 3rd pair minutes available. OEL and Ghost.

Not sure how cheap either would be but moving rielly to the 2nd PP would be nice... assuming they don't give Timmins an actual shot
