Core 4 No More: The Motherfucking Off-Season Thread

Down Goes Brown nails it in his mailbag— it’s not as complicated as Shanahan made it out to be. Of course part of Shanahan keeping his job is to make it seem like a complicated formula.


Is the real issue the leadership? — Roy L.

There is no real issue, in the sense that the term implies there’s only one.

The issue is coaching. The issue is scoring. The issue is goaltending. The issue is the top of the blue line. This issue is a stubborn-bordering-on-pathological resistance to making changes. The issue is experience. The issue is the shambles in their brains.

And yes, some of the issue is leadership. It has to be. You never know how much, because none of us are in that room, and we know there’s a ton of things we never see. Maybe John Tavares is slamming doors and breaking sticks and getting in faces behind closed doors, then projecting cool and calm when the cameras are around. Or maybe he has the same blank stare in the room that he always seems to have on the bench. We don’t know, at least until he’s gone and the knives come out.
 
In fairness, Shanny said he liked Tre's offeason additions last year, which was essentially Domi and Bert. Two guys that can't play D for shit, have a bunch of skill and tied for the Leafs lead in scoring in the playoffs while being giant pains in the ass for the Bruins. I'd take more of them.
 
Yup. Can't tackle this thing assuming there is only one single issue. Whether it's the pp, their lack of scoring every year in the playoffs, etc. Just based on logic and probabilities, it would be bizarre if there was a single cause. It would sure be nice! Easier to fix! But rarely the case.
 
At least they have the right problem. Its been scoring for years. Meanwhile year after year Shanny and Dubas got up there saying they just weren't "competitive" enough, whatever that even means, while making the team worse at scoring.

Well that at paying four forwards $11+ mill.

Yeah. The roster built by Shanny/Tre failed at keeping the D and goalie positions up to snuff.

This had me chuckling, its hard picturing Tavarese breaking sticks and getting in faces.
 
The answer was we need more D so we can score on our imaginary counter rushes
 
Todd McClellan seems to be part of the old boys coaching club, and the absolutely least qualified member.

I dont understand what the appeal is with this dude and he keeps getting work.

Fuck me, Dave Tippett has a way better resume, and he's been buried in a cornfield somewhere
