I would do 1st + Minten for McGrooty, yeah. He's probably NHL ready fwiw and having ELC contribution is always huge. Having Robbie-Knies-McGrooty would pretty much guarantee really good and cheap offensive wing depth for the next 3-5 years. Through Easton in there if he doesn't hack it at centre and we're pretty stacked for skilled winger.

If we're signing multiple RHD, yeah sure. We kind of fucked up Lilly's development (shocking, I know) and while he's still young in defender years, we've run out of cheap years and if we can pull another Sandin-Cowan move, we should probably consider the fuck out of it. Sign Tanev for 26 years at 2 million a year, Matt Roy for 6x5yrs, a depth body for cheap and then let the kids (Niemela, Villeneuve, Kokkonen, etc) compete for minutes on the bottom pair.

Eh, the media seems to know what we're doing before we do it these days and though the negativity is warranted, other than a single rumbling a few weeks ago, no plugs have been mentioned in connection with us and as I've argued a few times, Pizza Boy didn't favour plugs on his Calgary blueline at all. He targeted, Weegar's, Hanifin's, etc
I'm cautiously optimistic that given the situation (we have cap space, and good defenders are available in the UFA market) that we won't fuck this up badly. The contracts might end up being dumb, but the targets won't be.
My concern re: Lilly is that he's a RFA and if we sign even just one good RHD (Matt Roy), that possibly moves Lilly back to 3rd pairing duty if Berube prefers McCabe on the right. There's no sense paying him (AFP has him at 4.1 million) to play on the 3rd pairing.

I’m more worried about them Dubasing it,and being scared to overpay and not get two of the legit top dmen available that directly address their biggest need, than the bad contracts that they’ll need to give out to do it.

Given his UFA work last offseason, I think Tre sits tight, gives it a day and lets other teams pay for the bigger names, and then tries to land the second tier to lesser deals. Which sucks because Montour, Skjei would be amazing adds, but likely the first to go.

Why resign him for free when we can let someone else take the burden of paying him for most of next year and then we can just trade assets for him and reap the rewards like we did this year. Rinse and repeat, my friends.

We're in a way different cap position than we were a year ago though with different needs, and Pizza Boy had been in the job for 5 minutes before free agency started.
A year ago we had no idea that 5 million dollar Brodie was about to fall off of a cliff and Jarnkrok was our 5th best forward.
I don't want to defend the dude, I had him on my "worst case scenario" list after the Dubas firing and he's done nothing to make me change my mind on that so far, but I don't think his problem is going to be passing on the top guys. The hope is that he's able to get the ones he wants without overpay because he's not in Calgary anymore. Identifying Kadri as a top centre to sign wasn't his problem. Throwing 7x7 with minimal contract jiggery fuckery to make it easier to deal with on the back end was the problem there. But is that a Calgary organizational budgetary issue, or Pizza Boy being a dummy issue?

They did what they did last year because their top goals were resigning Matthews and Willy and they didn’t want to fuck up the future cap. Doesn’t seem like the same priorities with Marner/JT.
