COVID-19 Thread

A comment Andy made in another thread reminded me ... have any of you guys had a spike in adults wizzing around your neighborhoods on electric scooters? We've got a group of 8-10 middle aged dudes in my area who have clearly all bought scooters and they cruise around laughing like morons. Appropriately distanced morons, I might add. Honestly ... looks like fun.

Nope, we haven't seen that yet. My wife and I are both frequent runners and walkers (she's a biker, too), so we've noticed the huge uptick in the number of people doing the same.

Italian top soccer league can start practices May 18th. Also stores can open that day. Individual athletes can start May 4th. Looks like games resume in June with no fans.

I’ll put this here, since it’s semi-Covid related.

Torero’s Mexican restaurant is re-opening on Wednesday for takeout service. Their building was damaged in the April 2019 gas explosion in Durham. Their next door neighbor, St. James Seafood had re-opened in January but closed in March.

ECU says they intend to have regular classes in the fall. But I think the final decision will come from UNC board for all 16 system schools. We won't have some open and some closed.

Query: If you happen to know the answer. There was a Torero's at South Square that then moved down to garret but they changed their name... to Ole Fiesta Fiesta Ole. ... any idea why?

I don’t know the answer. However, when I typed “Torero’s” into Google Maps, I got results on Atlantic Ave. and Leland Dr. in Raleigh, Kildaire Farm in Cary, and 15-501 in Oak Creek Village (that came back as Fiesta Olé even though I typed in Torero’s). Seems to be a popular name, like El Dorado and Mazatlan, which are owned by different branches of the same family tree.

Thanks :)

Yep, the owner was a Venezuelan dude who made the best ever arepas. I mean, the best. ever. It's like chasing ghost by trying out the arepas from all of these subpar arepa trucks.

Apparently he had a penchant for running around town without his wife and he got caught. So he sold his restaurant moved back to his homeland. And took his amazing arepas with him. /sigh

That being said, Toreros is damn good gringo Mexican chow.
We love the Torreros on Kildaire Farm Road, been going for years, huge portions and a very large and extensive menu of Mexican fare...truly unique over most of the standard Mexican fare in the area.

Ah. Heard he had a nasty divorce.

NC State is also making plans to have on-campus classes in the fall ... based on a modified classroom capacity plan. Chancellor Woodson issued a fairly detailed statement yesterday. He also said that everything is up in the air right now in terms of setting hard procedures, so they're still tracking options with the hope of having a final plan in place by June.

For the classes with 200+ people are they going to cut those down to 50 or so? and just add more sessions?

Grad classes are usually small so those probably can just have people spread out. Not sure why they think they need to go back in August. God forbid there is no college FB! I mean there are coaches to be fired. :) Including one local guy.

That's the sort of detail that they're still working out in consultation with the State health authorities ... but yeah. Woodson did specifically mention that the large auditorium classes would have to be re-worked in terms of capacity and seating plan. They're planning to max out their capability for conducting as much instruction as possible on the internet, with the caveat that doing so with applied science and engineering classes is exceptionally challenging. It's a work in progress, so trying to grasp specifics at this point is kind of beside the point.

French soccer seasons are over. They won't resume play until September at the earliest.

The next two or three days should yield a lot of these final decisions, since UEFA have asked for each league's plans by May 1. Bless brave little Sweden for being the first to actually make a decision because everybody else just seemed to be waiting for the first shoe to drop.

Friend of mine at School of the Arts wrote me they are planning for fall occupancy, so it must be system wide. That can all changed, however.
