GDT #27: 16/11/2021 - Interesting Week

Haha. Marner overpay.
given his production at the time and all relevant comparables it was a gross overpay then and remains an overpay now. happy to relitigate this one! I mean Marner the player is fantastic, don't get me wrong.

but find me an example of another 20-goal beanpole winger who signed for an AAV of 11 as a RFA...

He’s a 100 point player almost out of the gate who can do it all. Should we have maybe played more hardball with him like Willy, probably. Is he overpaid, nah.

Top Winger Salaries

1. Artemi Panarin (UFA) - 11.6 m
2. Mucho Marner (RFA) - 10.9 m
3. Patrick Kane (UFA, cup champion) - 10.5 m
4. Nikita Kucherov (RFA) - 9.5 m
5. Mark Stone (UFA) - 9.5 m
6. OV (UFA) - 9.5 m
7. Mikko Rantanen (RFA) - 9.25 m
8. Kirill Kaprizov (RFA) - 9.0 m
9. LOL Jeff Skinner (UFA) - 9.0 m
10. Steven Stamkos (UFA) - 9.7 m

again, he received a contract that was not justified by any precedent or comparable player. you can still like the player, as I do, but for me it should be beyond debate as to whether or not it was an overpay.

I think the actual question we should focus on instead is was the overpay worth it? and I think, playoff performance notwithstanding, most folks would say yes.

the dude got a full 1.5 m above and beyond the closest comparable, who also happens to be better than him, a better goal scorer, and a cup winner. so there is that.

I'll be honest.. I completely under-estimated how defensive leafs fans were. Damn, I'm just curious to know what Campbell will get and that has been turned into CAP HELL! THEY CAN'T SIGN HIM! THEY'RE FUCKED!!

Literally just interested in the finances of this particular situation. Never once have I mentioned that it will be an issue. In fact, I know it won't. But you can't tell me it's not fascinating that a 30 year old goalie with the best save percentage in the league in the last two seasons (with a minimal sample size prior to that) is up for contract at the end of the year. I am very sorry, but the negotiations for this player interest me.

I will no longer discuss this topic. My apologies folks.

What a baby back bitch

If our starter ends up Top 5 in SV% for the first time in almost 30 years, one might say our goaltending is as rock solid as its been in decades afterall, even with the Mrazek injury.

Like I said, should we have played hardball and taken him down to the wire like Willy? I would have.

But is he WORTH $11M is the question I care about. And I think a pretty much lock for 100 points every season player who is on the PP and kills penalties, is worth $11M when I look at other top salaries in the league.

You can’t overpay elite players. As we have seen this year you can always get good, cheap players (Kase, Kampf, Bunting, Ritchie) to fill out a roster. Or just go over the cap by $18 mill.

I mean if you base your perception of 'worth' off subjective factors and ignore market comparables then sure. I don't know how to argue with a subjective valuation.

Also has he ever actually hit 100 points? And he hasn't scored on the PP in like two years?

Well they only played like 50 something games the last couple of years.

Before that, 94 in 82, so if you want to nitpick over a few points...

During the last two seasons, paced to 93 points and 99.89 points.

This year, we'll see how it shakes out but after getting like 2 points in the first 7 games or whatever, he's suddenly up to 15 in 17.

Age 24.

Antropov was a lock for 30 goals every year. And you just can't overpay 30-goal scorers.

But with that said, he's hardly a "lock" for 100 points every year. He's sniffed a 100 point pace last season, was below that the 2 previous seasons and is currently way the fuck below it this season, almost 1/4 the way in.

He's appears to be a lock for ~95 though, yeah.

I'd settle down on the whole "do everything" bit though. He's actually been pretty underwhelming on the PK among leaf forwards with 100 minutes over more in the last 3 seasons

xGA/60

Mitch: 6.1
Kappy: 6.03
Hyman: 5.86
Engvall: 5.29
Kerfoot: 5.23
Mikky: 5.00

and his not scoring a power play goal in over a calendar year is definitely a thing he clearly doesn't do.

Incredible play maker, incredible transition player, good motor. But let's settle down on this talk of him being some complete player, he really isn't.
