What's the point of buying them out? What would we use the money on? Plus the buyout slots can be leveraged.
If we need the roster slots, or the money, we can consider it, otherwise why bother dragging their contracts even more longer.

who mentioned buyout? Other teams trade bad contracts away, yet for the most part, we hold on to them. Keeping one of them is bad enough but keeping both basically means that of four lines, half are playing shorthanded
by the time you think the "rebuild" is over, it will be time to do it again. Leafs were crap for a long time, then in 2014 or so decided to rebuild, were good again in 2 years. They still haven't won. Your plan will have Wehave in diapers again before we make the playoffs.

They got 34 and 16. Oilers were crap for a decade and then they got 97 and 29. We have 14 and 22.

Leafs had 4 top 10 picks in 5 years, we’re at 3. And they got Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Reilly. Almost 3 100 points players, including an elite #1 center, and a #1 D.

You have to do cost benefit of buy amount + salary of replacement. It’s less of a cap hit if replacement is on an elc.
Reilly is not really a top Dman
and neither have won shit but that is the first time you have ever compared those players favourably

They haven't but neither the Leafs nor the Oilers were in rebuild mode once they had those players. 14 and 22/13 and even 20 are not at all level where you can declare our rebuild to be over.

He just wants token playoff appearances that he can get excited about watching. He doesn't care if we are annihilated in 4 straight so long as we're about "playoff team". He's already resigned himself to the never seeing another Cup so he's happy with being a bubble team that wins a few more games in a season than it does now.
The rest of us want an actual contender. A contender for a Cup, not just for 8th place and a 4 game playoff run.

Yes but it doesn't need to be anything more than that and doesn't require a lot of rebuild time. He just wants it to be a middle of the pack team that squeaks into the playoffs every year. He doesn't care about Cups anymore. He's given up on them.
