GDT | Game 26 | VS Kings | Thursday, December 7 | 7PMEST

we lost him for 500000 a season, he made the offer, Danault rejected it, the offer was leaked and Bergeron got pissed off. As usual, he bent over for his favourites like Armia, Gallagher, 4th liners and 3rd pair guys but fucked over others. He also did not consider for a second that he would also lose Mole so we ended up with 1 legit centre due to Bergeron's misreading of the situation.
Again, so what? The league is full of Danault's, Lehkonen's and Eller's. I don't know why people cry over losing Joe Average players with little or no offensive abilities. Anyone can be trained on how to block shots and kill penalties.

iirc you thought Evans would be an adequate replacement for Danault, how did that turnout

The issue was that Bergy had pencilled in Suzuki and KK as his top 2 pivots and Dano didn’t feel like he would be given a shot to compete
And that was a blessing in in disguise for Dano, given where he was/is in his career. Spending his late prime of career years as the second line center on a Cup contender, in a place where HE can affords to live like a king (pardon the pun) in great weather, without much, if any, media or fan pressure.

Evans is adequate.

There is no plane of reality in which we are "missing" Danault. With or without him this team is garbage. Paying big money to Danault doesn't change anything. He just costs money and doesn't move the needle.

Danault would probably move the needle a bit, which is exactly the last thing we want.

at the time we let him walk for free, we were coming off the Final appearance so even Nero did not expect to bottom out just a few months later
Nero was living in a fantasy world for most of his tenure. Even the roster that went to the finals was mostly garbage. He failed to accept that being lucky isn't the same as being actually good nor does it last as long.

Thanks Nero

You should never cry over the loss of players like Danault, Eller, Lehkonen, et al. They are not special in any way. The things they do best (backchecking, killing penalties, blocking shots, cycling the puck) are not skills which require elite level talent. Any NHL player can be trained and coached to perform those tasks competently.

What can't be taught or coached is how to score 40 goals or get 80 points in the NHL. For that, you need players with elite offensive talent. Talent is something you're born with or born without. You can't learn to be talented. The greatest coach in the universe can't train talent into you. The only way you become a great scorer is to be born with the capacity for greatness.

Anze Kopitar has talent. Danault has skill. Pay whatever it costs to acquire and retain players with talent. Teach the skills to the players without it. Kopitar is the guy you hire to paint the masterpiece and Danault is the guy you hire to frame it and hang it on the wall. One is an artist, the other a thoroughly replaceable tradesman.
