GDT JAN 21: TOR @ COL, 9pm

[

have not done the math with the cap yet though[/QUOTE]

I think this team needs more 2 way players, the problem is we have too many one diminesional guys who mostly are all out offensive guys or a very few defensive specialists. Outside of Bolland and maybe Bozak we don't have any 2 way guys up front, which is why I think its pivotal Bolland is resigned in the offseason, and we get rid of some one dimensional ones and add some versatility.

I'm all for adding another defenseman with experience if it's a guy that improves our first or second pair. But more "veteran experience" for the bottom-pair? No thanks.

Yeah, but just because I got greedy and went for Vanek. Wanted to see if it could fit.

It can.

But Morris also isn't just crappy depth. He's the #3 dman on a really good defensive team.

Having three greenhorns in the lineup is not really a viable solution. If you want to run the season out without an upgrade, fine, I agree. However, upgrading Franson does not necessarily mean obtaining a long-term option.

When do we stop considering Gardiner a greenhorn though? 24 with just short of 200 games experience by the start of next season. Rielly, also, doesn't play much like a greenhorn.

I really don't feel the need to save spots for anyone. If they earn a spot like Gardiner and Rielly did that is fine. No one is blocking players who deserve it. Never have never will.

This idea that adding players = adding filler crap though is just weird. Why can't we add good players that will help us more than some second or third tier prospect?

You pencilling a guy in for$1.5m kinda guarantees its gonna be crappy filler. In a best case, you get the mason raymond of dmen. The best case.

And we already want to let raymond go and let kids play instead......even though we have more and more nhl ready d prospects than forward prospects.

IMO Granberg is the best and potentially most ready one. Percy is interesting too. Guys like MacWilliam and Holzer don't do it for me though.

It would be nice to see Gardiner or Rielly step up their game to the point where they can be paired with Dion full time.....then add a great well rounded D to pair with the other, and have Gleason-Gunnarsson as a shutdown 3rd pairing that you could comfortably rely on at anytime.

Would make for a damn expensive D core tho.....unless you were able to find said defenseman in a deal for Franson +

My ideal defense addition is Byfuglien if he is actually available.

Rielly-Phaneuf
Gardiner-Buff

That would be sweet.

Gardiner is what he is an offensive through bred horse, he's a high risk guy who's going to **** up a lot trying to be the hero, he reminds me alot of Berard. Rielly at 19 is a lot smarter then Gardiner is at 24, Rielly is every bit of a skater as Gardiner is but he knows when to pull back and when to jump not to mention he's a lot better positonally then Gardiner is.

IMO it doesn't work on several levels 1. Rielly is 19 you cannot expect him to play 25 plus minutes a night against the leagues best players and thrive 2. Buff isn't a defensive guy and Gardiner is a nightmare in his own end he needs a stay at home guy to anchor him.... Buff isn't that guy.

I wouldn't mind seeing holzer get one more look, but this time in a more appropriate bottom pair role. Both his size and skating are nhl legit and he's been really good for the marlies.

I think we used him completely wrong and unfairly last year.

Gardiner and Buff spend most of their time in the other teams end.

And Rielly is a stud. He makes mistakes, but sooner or later... of course until then we still have Gleason and Gunnar to hold the fort.

Gunnar-Phaneuf
Gleason-Byfuglien
Gardiner-Rielly

Until the kids take over.

I like that idea, be interested in seeing him paired with a guy like Gleason.

I'm not a Holzer fan, but MacWilliam though...dude can legitimately skate, and hits like a freight train, a lot. I don't know if his puck skills can handle a full time role in the NHL yet (or ever), but he looks like a pretty ideal #7 defender for next season.
