Habs acquire Alex Newhook

The Athletic earned their 1.99 on the Dach Trade

Canadiens: A
Islanders: C
Blackhawks: D

Larger point for me: for years, if not decades, we've been clamouring for a GM that is less reactive and more focused on where the puck is going.

HuGo is the management we want. They are unafraid to buy slightly depressed assets because that gives them the best chance to accumulate talent.

I like the strategy of accumulating centres and hoping one breaks out

The Canadiens’ focus has clearly shifted

Montreal traded a good amount of draft capital to make this deal happen, which also demonstrates a clear shift in how they view where they are in the team-building process. The cupboard of prospects like the ones they could have acquired with the 31st or 37th picks is relatively full, so using those picks to bring in Newhook is a good reflection that the Canadiens believe their window to compete will be opening relatively soon. Perhaps not as soon as next season, but sooner than a typical timeline for a team holding the No. 5 pick in the draft would be. — Basu
I would like to think the Habs did their homework and calculated that the players likely available at 31 and 37 would not be better than Newhook.

There's a big difference between Dach & Newhook. Dach was rushed into the NHL by an organization that was just run by simpletons and it was a shitshow. He also got injured one year and that derailed his season.

Newhook, on the other hand, was eased into the NHL for two years and in the third year, he had every opportunity to grab a top-6 spot. And that's why Colorado traded him. There were plenty of holes in the top-6 and he wasn't able to establish himself there; He was expected to make the transition into their #2 center. I get that he has a Cup to his name, but he was a scratch in 40% of the playoffs.

Anyway, we'll see.

6'3" & 227 lbs Anderson
6'4" & 212 lbs Dach
6'3" & 228 lbs Slaf
6'2" & 200 lbs Monahan
6'4" & 218 lbs Armia
6'1" & 216 lbs Pez
possibly 6'1' & 185 lbs Heineman

Newhook is 5'10" and 190 lbs?
Newhook is fast and thick and is suited for wing, that's what Hughes said.
