bingo , Habs possibly wouldnt be put in that situation to hand out those dealsNot sure I agree. I think missing out on Tkachuk, Hughes, Giroux, etc, hurt us more than Gallagher’s contract.

I disagree. Andre had it worse.Nothing was was worse than this mess
Dont think Andre worked under a hard cap like now ?I disagree. Andre had it worse.
He did not, but he had barely any assets to work with.Dont think Andre worked under a hard cap like now ?
Teams are capped out now , much harder navigating the ship with a hard cap and no longer team friendly contractsHe did not, but he had barely any assets to work with.
After next season its clearly a gut job from day 1 when they took overI was joking about drafting top 5 next season. There will, barring serious injuries, actually be a second line next season, I believe. HuGo have a non-patchwork plan in place and it appears that Geoff Molson is on board with it. The team has not been gutted, it lacks some higher end talent, but that’s coming, and it lacks depth, which is why Dach’s injury was so impactful. I think HuGo have done an excellent job to date, other than passing on Michkov, but I understand their reasons for doing so. They have also said that they intend on being competitive as of next season. Let’s see. But the mess that MB left is ridiculous. He should never get an NHL GM’s job again.
Houle was a fouleHe did not, but he had barely any assets to work with.
It was worst than a hard cap. Cheap owner and internal cap. Habs had about half the payroll of the good teams.Teams are capped out now , much harder navigating the ship with a hard cap and no longer team friendly contracts
Hugo had a developing Suzuki , a midget one trick pony scorer and 3/4 trash roster
Toffoli for a first (Mesar). Chiarot for a first (Newhook). You actually need some talent to gut in a gut job.
What talent did we give up?
Hugo traded Petry and Lekky for Matheson, Barron and picks. Matheson is actually an upgrade over Petry
yes you are rightIirc Houle traded Malakhov to NJD (Souray deal), André Savard had Eric Weinrich (traded him to Boston, last deal w Bruins)
Toffoli for a first (Mesar). Chiarot for a first (Newhook).
Toffoli wasn’t a dump, it was the best asset he had. A 25ish goals/60ish points scorer on a super team friendly contract. I always felt we didn’t get enough return on that trade.Toffoli was a dump
Chiarot was a routine trade involving an expiring contract from a non playoff team

I meant yeah, I agree Toffoli trade was a tank move whereas the other trades could be justified as legit hockey moves.
Our biggest assets — Price and Weber — died on us. If they hadn’t expired on us, I wonder which direction the team wound have went
That’s an interesting question. But those were some heavy contracts, so it’s possible those assets would have died one way or another.
