Habs Season Thread: 2024-25 Regular Season

Sure, but it's easy for them to say after a season where they made no efforts to try have a competitive team, "Well next year we're going to make a push for the playoffs!" knowing damn well this team would need a massive infusion of talent to get there.
A healthy Dach & keeping Monahan adds 10-12 pts given 10-16OT & additional 18 1-goal games, that’s in the wildcard hunt…. hardly a team in need of “massive infusion”

He sounds like his boy, the Snake. Not saying they’re a playoff team next year - highly unlikely - but they should be fighting for a spot until pretty late in the season. I see about 85 points.

That’s very important IMO… the young players need the experience of playing important / higher intensity NHL games w weight of expectations at this point of their development path

Of course they need an infusion of offensive punch. Apart from Dach, Slafkovsky @ 100% from the get go and Hutson running the PP it’s clear they also intend to add someone via a trade.

...?

You mean the same Monahan that helped get this team to 48 points before he was traded? With only Ottawa, Columbus, Minnesota, Chicago, Anaheim & San Jose having less points than us?

What happens when Monahan doesn't come back next year? You want to tell me Dach's going to replace him, okay, cool. That team would still be on pace for 80 or so points... Which is 4 more than what we ended up with.

The offense, while underwhelming, isn't going to be the main problem next year: It's the defense & goaltending. Fifth worse GA in the league with virtually no changes coming up. You can pretty much already have a good idea of what our defensive pairs for next year will look like.

This team's going to have a lot of OT games next year because while I'm sure they'll be able to put up more goals, I don't think they can hold leads.

They later changed the rule so that goalies couldn't go beyond their own blue line. Too bad.
Actually they changed the rules before these clips.. you can see that Cheevers does not cross the red line.. "Rule 27.7 was instituted in the 1966–67 season, after the Toronto Maple Leafs' Gary Smith had been knocked out by Montreal Canadiens defenceman J. C. Tremblay's bodycheck as the former was crossing the centre red line carrying the puck."

Yeah, the old rule was that the goalie could go up to the red line. Later in the 70's they changed it to the goalie's own blueline.

Basu:.
- If Zegras is available the Habs will go after him. He expects Habs to be aggressive this summer.

- The way Hughes talks he expects Montreal to take step up this off season - will add a goal scorer + get more physical + help their specialty teams

I don't love Zegras but he's a legitimate scorer, he's available, he won't cost insane money, he's in the right age bracket for this team, and we need what he brings to the table.

He wont cost insane money now

In a few years his QO is about 6.5 even with poor production

They couldnt agree on a contract and settled on a 3 year bridge deal

Right age but leary of the player being shopped on a rebuilding team with good talent to start with

Well he's an American of Greek ancestry rather than a French Canadian so we needn't worry that we're signing him because of things unrelated to his actual play on the ice. He produced pretty well on a team even shittier than ours, with crap linemates.

And, of course, he went to BU, just like Lane and Celebrini, who Habsy assures us will be ours. If he even passed through Boston for a cup of coffee at Dunkin' Donuts, Hughes probably has some sort of connection with him.

Can you imagine if we acquired him AND won the Celebrini sweepstakes?

Lots of red flags that bothers me about Zegras. He fits the profile for age and skills but not sure about character. If cheap than maybe, but I wouldn’t overpay for him.

What’s wrong w his character exactly - he’s a rink rat & ultra competitive. He’s a Marchand type personality IMO

He’s flashy and not a “little ball of hate” type drop your gloves type player.

Thankfully his former youth hockey coach happens to be the Habs head coach, and can provide a low down on the player…

IMO, he lacks compete, plays a selfish game, and struggles with adversity. If there wasn’t character issues, he wouldn’t be available.

Just as Subban wasn’t a MB type player, Zegras isn’t a Verbeek type IMO

Verbeek apparently told his players at exit interviews to pay $20K for 1-week to train at Mike Barwis’ program in Florida…. Zegras apparently wasn’t eagerly jumping up & down
