Fla core minus Barkov (huge I know) & Ekblad were all acquired via trade or UFA (Verhaeghe)

Fla didn’t trade any actual drafted prospects except picks - excluding Huberdeau / Tkachuk swap

The "knock" on Brady was that while his floor was already at an NHL level his ceiling was low with little room for improvement. Kotkaniemi's ceiling, on the other hand, was in the stratosphere.

True. But it is important to keep drafting and developing so you can make trades.

Of course the core is often through the draft. Tampa, avs core was drafted while panthers are a nice combo and Vegas just goes for it.

Yeah, those teams can do that because good players and elite UFA's WANT to play in Florida and Vegas. Those same elite players laugh in your face if you try to convince them to come to Canada in general or Montreal in particular. Canadian teams can't free agent their way to a championship because they are on every free agent's no trade list.

No, but if you're Vegas you never have to worry about any elite free agent ever saying no to you so free agency is always an option. If you're a Canadian team, you only get free agents who are out of better options in the States.

If Suzuki had not been traded and had become the player he is today only in a Vegas uniform do you think he would ever choose the Habs if and when he were to hit free agency? Jamais.
