That's a good question.

Part of it is obviously luck, because it's not a formula that can be replicated year over year at scale. And for the good that they've done, they also made mistakes.

Personal opinion: I think they draft with the same philosophy as Carolina does: Swing for homeruns and not singles. A philosophy I would abide by as well, btw.

For sure. If Gignac had lets say 20 points in 43 games instead of 42 ( a career year for him), he probably doesn't get called up. He probably wasn't in the plans to be called up at all at the begininng of the season.

AHL is full of vets who can produce in the A but are nothing more than Hudon 13th forwards on most teams
