Leaf Rumours

Some people are really using our good shootout record to bury their heads in the sand about our record. Shootouts were a completely useless way of evaluating a team's performance last year when we were terrible at them, and it's still an totally useless way of evaluating a team this year now that we're good at them. The best way to see how this team is really doing is to look at regulation and overtime win totals, and in that category, the Leafs are 12th in the East and 23rd overall in the league. And with the way the team's played generally, especially in the last couple of months, can anyone really say that ranking is an inaccurate representation of how we've played?

To put it in further perspective, if all those shootout wins and losses became ties, our record would be 14-19-11.

Using normal standings the Leafs are 10th in the east and 20th overall in the league, so I'm not sure there is much of a difference whichever way you look at it.

I noticed you post about this issue the other day. A day earlier, Mirtle had posted a fairly long article about it on the Globe and Mail. Did you see that one? It's a good read: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/spor...eper-than-their-record-shows/article16201541/

While their record is 11-13-5 since Oct. 30, if you filter the six shootout wins and four losses out and count them as ties – as they would have been prior to 2005-06 – it would fall to 5-13-11.

There are obviously several reasons for concern, nobody is disputing that. The fact remains, until last night the Leafs were in a playoff spot ALL SEASON LONG. Areas for improvement sure, but hardly justifies 'the sky is falling' crowd.

Almost every NHL team has issues and kinks they look to improve upon during the season. The Leafs aren't unique in that regard. Despite all this, they've put themselves in a position to remain firmly in the playoff hunt, and more or less where most posters expected the Leafs to be (battling for a wild card with a chance at home ice).

You can have issues with the team without thinking the world is coming to an end... some of the rhetoric here is just over the top. Before this three game losing streak they were either 4-0-2 or 4-1-2... and at the end of the day, our record is the only stat that matters.

thing is, if the league went back to that points format, that record would have us in pretty much the same place in the standings we are now. being 7-4 in the shootout isn't anything crazy.

East standings under the no OTL no SO format:

PIT: 45gms, 28-13-4, 60pts, 109pt pace
BOS: 44gms, 27-14-3, 57pts, 106
TBL: 44gms, 21-16-7, 49pts, 91
MTL: 45gms, 22-17-6, 50pts, 91
PHI: 44gms, 20-18-6, 46pts, 86
DET: 44gms, 18-18-8, 44pts, 82
NYR: 45gms, 19-21-5, 43pts, 78
NJD: 45gms, 18-21-6, 42pts, 77
--------------------------------
OTT: 45gms, 18-21-6, 42pts, 77
CAR: 44gms, 18-22-4, 40pts, 75
WSH: 43gms, 13-18-12, 38pts, 73
TOR: 45gms, 14-20-11, 39pts, 71
CBJ: 43gms, 16-23-4, 36pts, 69
FLA: 44gms, 11-22-11, 33pts, 62
NYI: 45gms, 12-26-7, 31pts, 57
BUF: 43gms, 7-29-7, 21pts, 40

so it's only a drop of one or two slots in the standings, and a similar hurdle to getting back into the playoffs....and it would have been just the last 3 losses that finally dropped us out of a playoff spot under both formats.

Record of ROW wins as well as an assessment of the on ice product is all you need to evaluate this team for where it is at the moment.

My point isn't really that our shootout record has artificially inflated our place in the standings to a significant degree. It's moreso that our shootout record has artificially inflated peoples' perception of how well this team is doing. A good example is the people in this thread who have referenced the fact that prior to our current three game slide, we were 4-0-2 in our previous six games.

But if you dig a bit deeper, how impressive is that six game stretch? Only one of those four "wins" came as a result of winning an actual hockey game instead of going to a meaningless skills competition. Five of the six games went to a shootout. In the games that went to a shootout, the Leafs blew a lead with less than 7 minutes to go in the third period four times.

back to some ROOMERS,

Apparently there are rumours out that E. Kane may be on the block..

Now many here and even Nonis has said that they wouldn't trade our youth for older, quick fix players, but they would look to get someone comparable in age and stage.

What a deal that would essentially come down to Kadri for Kane. Then you call back up Holland to play the second line centre (if it works great, if it doesn't you look to sign Statsny in the offseason or you wait in out until Bolland comes back )

Would anyone here think that its a stupid idea. I know that some here like E. Kane alot... maybe it'd be good for both players.

Kadri and Franson for E. Kane and some #6 or 7D that could play in the minors.

I'd then call up Brennan to reward him with some minutes. Or just leave it be.

kane is a guy who probably has a career curve like kessel's. sooner or later he'll figure it out and put up better numbers.

but i don't see how trading kadri for him helps the leafs. they're basically the same age. they have produced at a similar clip this year. kadri's career ppg is in fact higher than kane's. and kadri plays a position where hte leafs have a much greater need.

if they're going to trade kadri it has to be for a top pair defenseman or a centre.

trading him for a guy who would be, at best, their 3rd best winger and, for now, their 4th best... wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Acquiring great talent is like drafting, you always go for the BPA....and for me.....Kane is, and always will be a better hockey player than Kadri. If we ever had the chance to acquire him for Naz, we'd have to do it in a heartbeat and look at other avenues to acquire a center.

Kessel, JVR, Lupul, Kane would be a filthy filthy top 4 wingers.

That's what I was thinking... Give Holland the spot in the mean time to see how he works for the remainder of the season.. he gives some more size and a better face off %... and if all else fails you see what Bolland looks like when he comes back.

The jets need a centre and maybe they see it as a swap of talent.. plus they get Franson for a bit

McClement would be an even filthier top 2 center for us in that event.
