Maybe Giroux has a better shot at being a ppg player than a 70 point player. Just sayin.

Giroux is good. Only question is if he is 99 point top 5 player, Stamkos-esq good, which it doesn't appear like he really is.

No one's arguing he hasn't been crap through 16 games this season, but using that to try and spin that he wasn't a PPG 82 point pace player last season, is just being intentionally obtuse.

He's not Stamkos good....he's likely Sundin-esque good.

Sounds insane on the surface, but yeah through 4 years and his age 23 season Stastny looked (statistically) to be as much as a lock to be a perennial PPG player as anyone.

I'd certainly never bet on that being Giroux's future, but you're right, it wouldn't be unprecedented.
 
think about Giroux is that he's always been a bit of a surprise guy, and I don't think his physical tools are top notch, so I feel a bit iffy about him, especially with his awfulness this year....paired with his massive contract.


even if he's just a Sundinish pppgish producer, he's still not the big strong fast physical donkey that Sundin was.

Physical tools aren't top notch? The guy is holding his stick with like an inch between his hands and then rips a hard shot off the post and in...all after rocking arguably the hardest guy on skates in the league.

No, I'm laughing at you for suggesting that the guy lacks the physical tools despite a long history of great plays on near PPG play up until this season.
 
It's probably not worth arguing, but it would be pretty sweet having him here,

His contract is a non issue. I move 90% of the team to get him in.

The guy is small and slow. The lack of those physical tools, and inconsistency in production, make me a little uncomfortable betting a lot on him to be an $8m franchise centre going forward.

Judging from recent comments made to the media, Craig MacTavish wouldn’t care much for this post. Exasperated by the “distracting” talk of a potential trade shipping Nail Yakupov out of Alberta, the general manager of the Edmonton Oilers insists the former top-overall draft pick (2012) isn’t going anywhere. That may very well be true (TSN’s Darren Dreger believes as much). But after the young forward did little this week to extinguish re-ignited trade chatter inspired by his agent, Igor Larionov, this particular state of affairs may only become more disruptive. If so, and if pushed, MacTavish and co. may end up cutting ties with the talented youngster after all. You know, when the right, too-good-to-refuse, offer comes along. Wouldn’t be the first time a team does a quick ‘bout face on the trade front after pledging to keep a firm grasp on a certain player.

So, wading into more speculative waters, where could Yakupov conceivably land? Talk of a potential deal involving the New York Rangers has echoed the loudest to date. Considering the Oilers’ desire for a skilled, power forward and an upgrade on defense, you can imagine Chris Kreider and Michael Del Zotto tick a lot of boxes. And there’s little chance – unless more is included – that Ales Hemsky lands the Edmonton club either Kreider or Del Zotto in return.

The Philadelphia Flyers are also thought to be somewhat in the mix. According to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, the Oilers are “crazy” for Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds. Perhaps the appropriate package, including Simmonds and forced acceptance of salary cap albatross Andrej Meszaros, will do in netting Yakupov.

Beyond the Rangers and Flyers, the Buffalo Sabres, Toronto Maple Leafs, Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils have been linked to the Oilers as prospective trade partners; mostly due to the presence of Edmonton scouts at recent games. After adding goalie Ilya Bryzgalov, the Oilers’ interest in doing a deal with the Sabres – even under the new Ted Nolan/Pat LaFontaine regime – might be muted. Ryan Miller reportedly wasn't going to thumbs-up a trade to Edmonton in any case. But the others have valuable, blue-line assets presumably coveted by Edmonton management. Whether it’s Toronto’s Jake Gardiner or Devils defenseman Adam Larsson or another candidate altogether.

I think Franson makes more sense for EDM than Gardiner because Franson gives them more size and more hits.
