Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

3G + 2A on the season now in the MHL, in 5 games. He's played in the KHL as well with 1 G + 1 A in 9 games. Apparently the KHL team is pretty shit, so he should get an opportunity soon with the big club. Leafs legend Nick Shore is their leading scorer.

I know it's easy to talk shit about our organization right now, that's what failing to meet expectations does, but I've seen far too many people talk shit about our prospect pool lately and I think it's BS personally.

This is a constant as a Leaf fan though. We always have no prospects according to most of the hockey world. Always.

Needs more icetime

What did Jordan say about failure? He failed so many times. Stop worrying about the past and the Leafs failures. They’ll be fine. We’re all meeting up at the parade. I’ll bring the throne for Zeke.

Nice to get goal 1 but this isn't the first clip I've seen where his speed is untouchable. Skating is one thing I always worry about with college guys and his seems to be legit NHL plus.

Yeah, that's sexy. When you can skate like that there's all sorts of places in a lineup you can slot in. Even if you develop no hands at all, wheels and a motor will make you an above average 4th liner.

To return to Niemela for a moment, he was decently rated on a bunch of the top 100 prospect lists during pre season, but I want to kind of revisit where he sits among defenders for a moment.

In rough order of how they were ranked pre season:

Drysdale (19) - .33ppg (NHL)
Seider (20) - .88ppg (NHL)
Byram (20) - .71ppg (NHL)
Power (20) - 1.0 PPG (NCAA)
Sanderson (19) 1.16ppg (NCAA)
Heinola (20) .6ppg (AHL)
Harley (20) .2ppg (AHL)
Broberg (20) .67ppg (AHL)
York (20) .33ppg (AHL)
Soderstrom (20) 0.0ppg (NHL)
Bouchard (22) .5ppg (NHL)
Schneider (20) .16ppg (AHL)
Guhle (19) 1.16ppg (WHL)
Lundqvist (21) .16ppg (NHL)
Addison (21) .5ppg (AHL)
Niemela (19) .89ppg (Liiga)

It's early in the north american leagues to start drawing conclusions, but the early look is probably that there are a few elite prospects at the top that are NHL ready (Drysdale, Seider, Byram) that have created seperation and then two elite prospects in the next tier (Power & Sanderson) that an older prospect like Bouchard might belong with just due to his proximity of making some sort of an impact in the league. After that though, it's tough to not vault Niemela to at or near the top of what's left in that list. An easy, easy top 10 defensive prospect nipping at the heels of the top 5.

The reason what Niemela is doing is so impressive is that no 19 yr old defender in Liiga has even come close to this kind of offensive impact in modern times. Sami Vatanen is #2 all time in liiga with .60 and Vatanen was a pretty good pucking moving defender at the NHL level. Other well hyped liiga prospects were putting up half of his production (Juolevi, Pokka)

First one was like ... okay, so you wired one from distance. Goalie error, probably. Then, he wires another from distance and it's like ... might have a shot. Add that to the wheels and you've got a nice (free) prospect.
