Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

To be clear, I don't think we can expect him to ever be Muzz. Muzz was one of the best in the league. But he's probably better than he looked in the playoffs. And definitely better than he looked playing with Klingberg.

The fact that we produced Robertson and Knies, plus Cowan and Minten, despite trading away all those picks, is pretty amazing.

Those four are all 1st round level prospects, maybe even high first round quality. The fact that we have other guys like Niemela, Greybonkybonk, Hildeby, Hirvonen, and others is a bonus.

I'm very happy with our pipeline given we assembled it while being a top regular season team with several selections dealt off.

Okay, relax with this romanticizing of Muzz. He wasn't that good. He was pretty good, not amazing.

And he turned into a lump of coal exactly when it was obvious he was done, and we held onto him anyway because we were dumb. We easily cost ourselves a 1st and a prospect by not trading him.

or does produce and we refuse to play

I hear you but that's 1 guy. Why are we always trying plug holes with projects, overpaying at deadlines and sifting through the free agent pile every year?

A significant part of that is lack of a quality system, and part of that in turn is routinely firing all our picks out the door (on non-successful teams, it must be added).

If the Leafs were winning Cups, you'd simply say it's the cost of doing business and winning teams care about the now and not the future etc etc. All of which is true...but only if you're actually winning. They appear to have taken a significant step back this season, so it'll be interesting to see what Treliving does.

sorry, I mean what Shanahan does.

yeah he's a decent 4th on a good team. Muzzin was a top pair dman who you could routinely play against top opposition and win a Cup with. The transformation of the Leafs defence when he and Brodie got here was like night and day. But they were veteran players when we got them and it wasn't going to last forever. As bandaids go, they did a helluva job.

what does "bandaid" even mean

It means the defence was horrible and Dubas got two foundational pieces to fix it, but those pieces were older players and you only have so long on which to rely on them as pillars. Eventually Muzzin and Brodie simply broke down, as older players tend to do. but for a few seasons, they really improved things.

At least it's clear that $5M will be freed up from Brodie, even if he were to return for a more limited role.

There should be good money available to replace guys in the offseason.

So 29 year olds are bandaids.

at 29, your best season(s) are statistically most likely behind you. you've got a few years left of your prime if you're a good player. injuries become more likely. decline in play becomes far more likely. this is normal and natural, we've all seen the graph charting age and production alltime.

Muzzin was great for us, but let's not forget he only could play 50 games a year here, and visibly slowed towards the end as the injuries piled up. Does that sound like a long term solution to a position of dire need to you??

now here we are a few years later right back where we started. Morgan Rielly who we have to shelter defensively and not a whole heck of a lot else. Again, Brodie and Muzzin did a good to great job for a short period of time. And now that they're essentially both gone, there's nothing behind them remotely of the same quality of their peak, which naturally is reflected in the team's defensive results.

so yeah, bandaid. a 1-3 year solution to a problem that we now have once again. Building a quality defence corps that has the legitimate depth to match up to playoff opponents.

Vegas Cup Dcorps:

Pietrangelo 33 - added at age 31 - bandaid
Theodore 27 - added at age 22 - not bandaid

Martinez 35 - added at age 32 - bandaid
McNabb 32 - added at age 27 - bandaid?

Whitecloud 26 - added at age 21 - not bandaid
Hague 24 - drafted - not bandaid
Hutton 29 - added at age 28 - bandaid
