Clearly, Shanahan has chosen to look the other way on well-regarded general managers with winning records and impressive resumes. He passed on Peter Chiarelli, hired quickly by Bob Nicholson in Edmonton after being fired in Boston. He passed on Ray Shero, hired quickly by the experienced Lou Lamoriello in New Jersey, when Lamoriello was pushed upstairs. He hasn’t spoken to George McPhee, architect of the Washington Capitals.

In fact, would any coach — except a desperate one — accept an NHL appointment without knowing who his general manager is going to be? The two need to work hand-in-hand, or at least understand each other well. Why would an in-demand coach such as Babcock consider any job in which he doesn’t know for whom is he is working?

...is a whole world of hurt, considering the Leafs hired "experienced Lou Lamoriello" himself, and George McPhee ended up being the runner-up.

pfffft, whatever. He said in the presser, everyone has oversight. If he wants to keep his job he'll be part of the team, but of course he has the final say, he's the boss.
 
He also said he reports to Shanny. Its still Shanny's team. Lou has the exact role Nonis did and that they've said they've been looking to hire for months.

No. But it is true, and there is zero reason to think that it isn't. Shanahan hired him. Shanahan is his boss. If your boss doesn't like what you are doing...

Shanahan has been open and honest form day one about everything from his plan, to the structure of the front office. Anything he didn't want to share he hasn't said (e.g. specifics about his plan).

If you want to try to read into things, and not take them at face value then you just haven't been paying attention for the last year.
