Lou Lamoriello named Leaf GM

Wonder if Conte comes aboard on the scouting side somewhere now.

Hope not. The biggest reason for the Devils decline the last few years was poor drafting. Merril, Severson, Gelenas and Henrique are the only players of note they've selected in the last 10 years.

I doubt it. Why would he want to come here to play second banana to Mark Hunter?

Besides, I'm not even sure we'd want him. The Devils' drafting for the last 10+ years has been utter shit.

Darren Dreger just said that Lou is a lot more progressive-thinking than people give him credit for. If true that's nice to hear because most people seem to be worried about this. Let's face it, Shanahan would not get a guy who isn't buying into what they are doing here.

By the way, to those who thought new Leafs management model run like a committee, Lamoriello is definitely not a committee man.

Like I said, Lou would not have taken this job if he didn't hold all of the power. This is a very very very scary day. I feel like all the progress that they made has been lost.

Shoaltis (and most other MSM piping on this) is a clueless moron. Fact is, the Leafs are doing this on the down low. There have been zero leaks about anything relevant since Nonis has left, the MSM is just throwing shit at the wall (Alpha dog, bad at cap management, bad at player selection) to get hits.

I'd rather read Mindzeye and a bunch of others here, who at least bring salient, researched points and data along with their opinions.
This is a good move, if only to groom Dubas.

Of course he is. Just because he is old doesn't mean he is still operating like its 1980. He wouldn't have had the kind of success he did, over the time span if he didn't adapt with the times. No one has that kind of success over a 30 year span.

For sure. Jonas Siegel seemed to make a big deal(on the radio) and kept saying how he doesn't get this at all, doesn't make much sense, etc.

Oh I agree, but my point is when major people join a new org often times the trusted lieutenants follow. Aside from 2012 the Devils have been shit recently as well and that didn't stop the Leafs from hiring the Loufather.

The question LeafGM quoted in the post you responded to.
I think hiring Lou is dumb - yes. He won all of his cups on the back of trap hockey and a top-5 goaltenders of all time.

I've always believed Lou's magic is overstated. Not to mention he's long in the tooth.

Babcock mentioned "sounding board" and "mentor" to Hunter/Dubas a couple times in his comments.

Think we'll hear more like that at the presser.

"He only won multiple cups, and maintained a contender for over 20 years by innovating and changing how the game was played and drafting multiple hall of fame talents. Not that impressive."

"If I want anyone recruited to go anywhere, I'm sending Brendan." - Lamoriello on Shanahan's role #TMLtalk

Basically said he wasn't even considering it when Shanahan first approached him.
