Maple Leafs @ Penguins - HNIC

You're not ready to blame it all on the best Leaf of all time....just yet.

Cool.

So, do you have to wear the helmet everywhere or just certain places?
You need to ask yourself what difference has he made since coming back? I'd say next to nothing. Boys did just fine (or better) without him. If he was a rock star in the playoffs I might be more optimistic about Matty...but history shows otherwise. Time to pull your head out of the sand.

Kids today and their silly takes that losers like Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews are the best players in the NHL with their ZERO CUP WINS.

ZERO.

They don't hold a candle to guys who are actually the best players in the NHL like Pat Maroon with his THREE CUP RINGS.

Not one, not two ...

THREE!!!

The best Leaf of all time is, was, and always will be Dave Keon. He won Cups. Remember Cups? Oh right. You don't.

Keon.

A team wins a cup, not an individual.

If you think removing Keon and putting an elite 2 way multiple 60+ goal scoring centre is the difference...well fuck, borrow the other guy's helmet.

Also....If Auston Matthews only had to beat 5 other teams to win a chip....well...he and Connor both would probably have a couple by now.

I'm not trying to knock Matthews. He is very talented and a great two way player. But he is not going to be the guy who gets the Leafs to a Stanley Cup Final. I don't see him as an inspiration to the other players. Maybe not the best Captain pick.

Considering that Auston has never won more than one playoff series in his life I very much doubt that he'd have any more Cups than he does now.

Gentlemen from above forgot that hockey is tea sport, only goalie can steal games as they are there all 60 min.
We had second best goalie every playoffs game, our D was questionable at best.
To win cup we have to be dominant in every aspect due to special treatment from referees, in cap era this is impossible unless we have 4-6 young studs playing for future contracts
Just enjoy the ride
We missed window

Its a good point. If the goaltending continues as it is right now and into the playoffs then we are in a much better position. Still, more goals per game would be nice to see. We are weak in so many other areas.

That is not fault of our captain

My preference would be to have a Captain who is more visible and overt. I find Matty does his thing (forecheck/backcheck) PP PK but does not really stand out as a Captain. Maybe a few more years will see him fit the role better. Right now it just looks like a "C" on a jersey and little more. No visible leadership.

He missed month and still looks not 100%
I say after 40 games we will know what to expect
From other hand he might just saving it for playoffs

Sure but even in a 30 team cap era most of the best players win, Crosby, Malkin, Toews, Kane, Kessel have 3, kucherov, Hedman, stamkos, doughty, kopitar, Pietroangelo won 2. Pronger, niedermayer, lidstrom, datsyuk, chara, Bergeron, Mackinnon, Makar, Ovie, Eichel, Barlow, Tkachuk, Getzlaf all won.

Giroux, Tavares, Pavelski, Thornton, Karlsson, Weber are basically the only vet studs that haven’t/didn’t win. And McDavid/Matthews are better than those guys.

They gotta get it done.

Organizations win titles though, not individual players. Matthews and Connor weren't the ones making phone calls to trade assets for Lyubushkin's, Ceci's etc to push them over the top. Pittsburgh made a bundle of smart moves around Crosby and Malkin to get their cups. Tampa, likewise made a bundle of smart moves to get theirs, etc.

Where are our smart moves around Matthews? We got shook down in early contract talks, brought in the wrong 11 million dollar player, and keep getting older, slower, and more defensively oriented as our reaction to losing to faster teams.

You're right, they gotta get it done. You're wrong about who the they is though. This isn't the NBA where you can put an okay supporting cast around a superstar and squeeze out a championship or two.

Bribing an official helps too in basketball
