Martin Reway Signs

Bergy started off well....but became too complaisant after that....he probably didn't believe in his team, so hesitated to give away young talent for that top 6, thinking they needed another year or two to mature as a group first (Subban, Gally, Chuckie, Beaulieu).

But now we screwed himself into a corner...Price, Max, and Chuckie won't be making little bucks forever, and Markov is done within 2 years. That, and the fact Price got injured last 3 out of 4 years really screwed up his plan of slowly building a contender

Bang on he is pinning himself in a corner , you cant add what we need and then add the mega salary increases to our existing core and make it work .

We will be capped out with everyone with NMC and no flexibility .

The Kings have a clear-cut identity and they make their rosters moves around that identify; They're big and physical. Over the last 5 full seasons, they've acquired only 5 or 6 players in their whole organization that were under 6', and three of 'em were minor leaguers.

The Habs are a speed & skill team playing an unskilled type of game. The Habs have the D to be playing a fast game, but they're not.

I really have no idea what this team's identify is supposed to be.

When we play our game we're a chip-and-chase team with constant puck pressure in all 3 zones with a quick counter-attack transition. Nothing quite wrong about it but we're mostly lacking forwards who can win puck battles so we rarely have control of the puck. The Kings play a similar game but are much more effective on the forecheck, and they have much better breakouts than us.

I mostly think that the fact that we had too much immediate success screwed up with his plans to build through the draft, instead we started trading away picks for deadline acquisitions instead of unloading players for more picks and prospects.

Gotta hate that "immediate success."

For sure...MB and MT were in quick turnaround mode. Prust was signed. And the lockout helped Gallagher and Chukie make the team from game 1.

If we were content to suck that year, not only do we get a good draft pick but players like Gionta, Pleks, Markov become compelling trade bait for more futures.

I think they were in stabilize things mode but unexpectedly turned it around quickly. Too bad Price got hurt the next seasonin the playoffs. May not come that close again for a while.

thats the regime`s fault for thinking we were good enough to compete

Funny thing is that if Vanek didn't decide to go completely MIA in the playoffs and if Price didn't get injured, we might have had a shot.

You cannot succeed in a chip-n-chase system with the players we have. When you play chip-n-chase there's going to be an opposing player who is also trying to get to the puck so at some point you have to be able to win 1-on-1 puck battles and the Habs don't have the players to do that. There are too many pantywaists who shy away from contact or who are just too small to win physical battles. If you want to play chip-n-chase successfully you need to be fast but you also need to be big and mean. The Habs are smallish and speedy which would make you think they'd be better suited to a puck possession style. But for the most part and with few exceptions they aren't talented enough to play a puck possession game because they get knocked off the puck and pushed around too easily.

In the end, no matter what system you employ, it's NHL hockey. You have to have players who can take and dish out hits or you will get nowhere. No system can work with guys like DD and Pleks playing significant roles on your top 6 and chip-n-chase is a system designed for players with brawn but no skill. Therrien would be more successful coaching a team of talentless meatheads like himself. Instead he tries to shove square pegs into round holes, telling the entire dressing room "We're a grinding team. Accept it. Do it!"

Anyone with two eyes and a brain can see that Therrien doesn't have the first clue about what kind of team he's coaching here. But then again, his boss doesn't seem to have the first clue about how the coach he hired is incompatible with the players he's acquired for him to lead.

I have an idea: How about the next time we get a GM who just wants to hire his friends we find someone who has more talented friends than Therrien, Lefebvre, Daignault or Lacroix?

Once we didn't tank in year 1 of the regime, we were in compete mode as our roster was good enough for ECF. So getting Vanek was a good play. If the ECF was as strong as WCF, then rebuild thinking would have been greater than compete now mode

Who's to say that this GM could have properly completed the/a rebuild. When you have a shot at winning it all, you go for it.

Its up to your regime to understand where you stand and what your shortcomings are . Vanek came to us cause we had the cap to absorb and won the game of chicken when Isles realized they werent getting fk all in return with 10 minutes left at the deadline . We were not in legit compete mode cause our issues were still the same , a soft team and too many underachievers when you need them to step up .

Our failure to keep relying on the same players afterwards especially the handling of 27 is unacceptable , and our coach`s reluctance to try new things , adjust to game changes made it worse.

How long does it take to understand that compete mode = non compete mode when you keep going back to the same 51, 14 , 79 etc and try to win in the playoffs .

I am still shocked that it took an injury to 51 to finally get 27 in his proper place and he exploded , we would still be talking about when the hell is 27 ever going to come around on this team .

How do people not get canned doing this , we are many pieces away from true compete mode .

If Chuckie keeps improving and becomes a 70 point player next year, MB and MT will be high fiving each other at how well the team developed him.

Yep, that's the established narrative. Take credit for good things that happened in spite of your incompetence and make excuses for the stuff you can't fob off onto others. A real profile in courage. I just wonder where they get the moxie to put up that "NO EXCUSES" sign in the dressing room with a straight face when all they do is make excuses for failing.

And maybe they should get some credit as well. Obviously Chucky deserve the bulk of the credit.

Why would they think else wise? Besides this year we were doing fine.

because we were never that good and the correct word is were .....as soon as the meal ticket went down. We showed no gumption , leadership , coaching strategy ....nothing but a team that turtled into a corner.

Everybody knew Price was our best player. No one had any idea he was that much our best player
