New Canadian Politics Thread

ah so a libertarian ethos that is somehow also strong and organized enough to block corporatism.

You seem to be again intentionally ignoring what I said. Have you ever heard libertarians going on about the oppressed and exploited?

Ambrose, O'Toole or Mackay.

Ambrose would win, Mackay has a chance, O'Toole is Scheer light.

MacKay’s got name recognition at least, on the basis of being the one to fold up the Federal PC’s. But he’s an empty suit that wasn’t a particularly strong member of Harper’s cabinet.

Ambrose would be dogged by the same SoCon questions that were tossed at Scheer (she hilariously voted to re-open Canada’s abortion laws in a free vote while serving as the “Minister for the status of women”) though maybe she’d do a better job of answering them.

O’Toole I don’t really know enough about to say.

I wasn't a fan of that either, as much as I dislike Scheer.

Even if Trudeau decided to do it to Scheer because Scheer himself decided to interrupt Singh's speech first, Trudeau should have taken the high road. But unfortunately, statesmanship was in short supply last night, and that doesn't bode well for an electorate with such sharp regional divisions.
There were two incidences that made me not care about that.

In a Acadian festival Trudeau went up to give a friendly hello to Scheer, and Scheer responded with how he needs to stop lying to Canadians. Listen, in the house, act how you act, be a dick, hold government to account, whatever. Outside the house, stop the games, act like a decent person.

In the English debate, Scheer ignored the first question and went right after Trudeau and called him a fraud and a phony. Listen, we get one English debate, once chance to hear your parties views. From the offset, Scheer made it a slugfest, and set the stage for leaders ignoring questions and getting involved in attacking and talking over each other.

Two big cases of Scheer acting like a fake tough guy that results in a personal animosity between the leaders, which results in Trudeau just not giving a fuck and undercutting his speech. Total power move by the guy who actually wins power. It was petty, but Scheer deserved it.

I respect legal gun owners. I question the need for having any type of weapon that would fall outside the realm of hunting

My father is a hunter and owns multiple guns but all are single shot rifles.

That’s the issue tho, why can’t I keep my legally obtained hunting rifles. I use a semi-automatic .223 for hunting small game. I use a semi auto .308 for big game. So if they want to ban semi auto firearms i’m out multiple firearms. As I also have more that are just range firearms. And when any common sense person knows that is not the issue with firearms in canada.

Wouldn't a .22 be just as efficient (if not better) for small game? I dont see the need for a semi auto in a case like that

And what if they set up a buy back program? Would you be as reluctant to turn them over?

.22 is a little under powered or coyote for an ethical Hunter in my opinion.

Semi and bolt action really matter? Same ballistics. Same firing range, only thing is I don’t have to make noise moving a bolt to reload while hunting.

And yes I do eat majority of the animals I hunt. Not coyote but that’s pretty much it. Everything else gets consumed.

And obviously I’m a law obiding gun owner so I will do whatever is needed, not saying it makes much sense

Yeah. I was surprised to hear JT mention guns in his victory speech.

Heh, whatever helps you sleep at night city boy.

The ignorance of and contempt for those living outside 416, or *gasp*... the wastelands that lie beyond the 905, is pretty hilarious in this thread.

Always love how open contempt of city dwellers is fine and dandy with you oversensitive countryfolk.

If you guys are out trophy hunting big game with a machine gun, you can go fuck yourself, no matter where you live.

I have a lot of empathy for hunters. The issue is to get “guns off the streets”, which is a legit urban concern.

Separate issues, IMO. Need to look at non-banning approaches first.

Trudeau is going after semi automatic assault weapons.

If someone needs a semi automatic assault weapon to hunt they are a really shitty hunter.

You're the first person to mention trophy hunting, he was talking about the guns he uses for big and small game. My point was if you think the only legitimate reason to hunt (specifically smaller game/pests) is to eat, you're living in a dreamworld.

And contempt for city dwellers? I love the city, and the people. I live here now. I didn't mention city dwellers, just this thread.

What I have contempt for is this general notion that these blue ridings and everybody who casts a ballot for the CPC is some cornfed hick, and Toronto needs to "save" the country. And no, your Facebook feed is not proof of anything. There's dumb fuck voters on the left and right, in the city and in the country.

The riding I grew up in was a Liberal stronghold until like 15-20 years ago. Now they might as well not even run a candidate. Why would that be? Hint: it's not because they, or their kids, all became a bunch of gun toting pro lifers. But figuring that out would actually require giving a shit.

Semi auto assault weapons isn’t a legal category of firearms so that is the BS part of this. He keeps mentioning AR15’s. Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t believe that’s ever been used in a multiple shooting in Canada. He is playing off the media and shootings in the USA to make it LOOK like he is doing something positive here, but in reality those who know the difference know that it doesn’t actually do anything to help the gun violence in the GTA.
