fuck. all this hand-wringing about 'omg how are we gonna tow them' is fucking infuriating.

only when white people protest do we sit and do nothing because 'omg removing them may be difficult'. never matters a lick if the protesters are not white.

the double standard on its own would be one thing but just this past week has made crystal clear the absolute fucking chasm that exists between how people of colour are treated and how white people are treated by the police. and it is kinda terrifying... feels like we live in a white nationalist state when the (enforcement, at least) powers that be are clearly sympathetic to that cause above and beyond all others.

Agreed. They could ticket pretty aggressively. You have the right to protest, you don’t have the right to park a truck wherever the fuck you want.

Yep.

Tow them one at a time. Once you start, 90% of the rest will drive away on their own.

Or, arrest the drivers for not complying with the order to evacuate, take the keys and drive the trucks away.

I mean this is the most egregious and extensive protest to hit Ottawa in years. and yet the response was a week of... absolutely fucking nothing.

then residents complained, so they did a little tiny bit of maybe something.

and now, a full week-plus after they rolled in, they are just cluing in to the fact that they have a problem.

what gross abdication of responsibility by the civilian and police leaders. absolutely pathetic.

So granted I’m a few blocks away but I haven’t really seen any evidence of anything still going on in Toronto today. Are they still out there or did ours fizzle?

and if the fuckers turn violent, then you are justified in using additional force.

I guess rule of law only matters when the protesters are fucking minorities.
Yeah, this is the most ridiculous part. Are they peaceful protestors whose right to protest needs to be respected, or are they hostile invaders that are ready to take up arms against law enforcement?

We can guess, based on how many of these people have been harassing, abusing and assaulting locals, that it’s the latter. If that’s the case, then why aren’t they being dealt with in that way? On the other hand, if the approach is to give them the benefit of the doubt, then start driving them out. Be for it to turn ugly.

Yeah, this is a weird take. After declaring a state of emergency yesterday, feels like the correct solution is "ticket and tow them" and make them go away. I don't think negotiating will do anything.

Yeah, I think it moves from being a protest to being an invasion once they stayed past the first weekend. Now, granted, if they wanted to keep protesting, I imagine they could have maybe worked out something that didn't involve refueling trucks with jerry cans while smoking cigarettes on residential streets.

What in the hell is there to "mediate"?

It's a band of alt-righter criminals who's stated goal is to overthrow Canada's elected government and system of parliamentary democracy, and replace it with an unelected Junta that they have veto power over.

Honestly, it's a national embarrassment the way Ottawa police is handling this. And how every level of government is MIA.

I suspect this is why they (the Ottawa mayor & all those involved) went with the 'kid gloves' or 'hands-off' treatment with the bullies. They sympathized and/or agreed with them.

I disagree with this take on the inaction. Some police maybe, but mostly I do think that they wanted to avoid it turning into a riot situation. Certainly more should have been done at the beginning to limit the size and scope of what was. supposed to be a protest. However, hindsight does not solve the problems today.

As a side note I was really surprised at just how small the Ottawa police force is. In my opinion the need more assistance fro the OPP and RCMP than they have at present.

That's fair.
