Calling Trudeau "one of the most popular political figures on the planet" is some pretty hilarious hyperbole.
That said, I don't disagree that while this scandal might be a big deal in political circles, I'm not sure how much it'll resonate with the average voter.
And you do always have to keep in mind that Trudeau's competition are Jagmeet Singh and Andrew Scheer. And Scheer in particular has the problem that he'll likely have to keep defending his right flank from Maxime Bernier by doing stupid shit like his appearance with Faith Goldy, and showing enthusiastic support for the "United we roll/Yellow-vest" protestors.
That shit might play well with the hardcore CPC base, but if Scheer wants to form the next government, he'll need to appeal to the wide swath of Canadians in the mushy middle of the political spectrum. And to a lot of those people, dog-whistle appeals to nationalism & xenophobia are electoral poison, as we saw with Harper's anti-Muslim snitch line in the last election.
