New Canadian Politics Thread

Calling Trudeau "one of the most popular political figures on the planet" is some pretty hilarious hyperbole.

That said, I don't disagree that while this scandal might be a big deal in political circles, I'm not sure how much it'll resonate with the average voter.

And you do always have to keep in mind that Trudeau's competition are Jagmeet Singh and Andrew Scheer. And Scheer in particular has the problem that he'll likely have to keep defending his right flank from Maxime Bernier by doing stupid shit like his appearance with Faith Goldy, and showing enthusiastic support for the "United we roll/Yellow-vest" protestors.

That shit might play well with the hardcore CPC base, but if Scheer wants to form the next government, he'll need to appeal to the wide swath of Canadians in the mushy middle of the political spectrum. And to a lot of those people, dog-whistle appeals to nationalism & xenophobia are electoral poison, as we saw with Harper's anti-Muslim snitch line in the last election.

Lets keep perspective here.

The Liberals just easily won a NDP stronghold 3 days ago, and completely dominated the total vote count in all these by-elections combined.

The Liberals continue to poll well in BC, Ontario, Eastern Canada and esp Quebec.

Last month Andrew Scheer demanded that the Liberals political interfere with the Tori Stafford case. So he's a hypocrite

Harper would have demanded that the AG do what he says. It is now confirmed that Trudeau didn't ask her to do something. He asked her to consider the 9000 jobs that could be lost.

2 weeks ago Andrew Scheer spoke hand in hand with White Nationalist Faith Goldy at a protest in Ottawa.

There are 7 months until the elections and the Libs have been ahead in the polls for nearly the entire 3 years in power.

They have had no scandals until this. This scandal is unsexy and confusing to the average person.

Scheer asking one of the most popular political figures on the planet to resign over this very silly.

The issue here has been issues management. It snowballed because of them.

sheer is sometimes hurt by his lack of presence, but here it will help him.

Nobody will know or care come election day about what he did or said about the tori Stafford case or that he spoke at united we ride. Scheer os for sure a hypocrite, but hes currently not on trial in the court of public opinion.

And trudeau, while having no major scandals, has had hiccups. The Aga Khan vacation, the India trip, khadr payout, electoral reform U turn, the horrible rollout of legal weed, the big deficits, the handling of the Huawei case, a lot of little things have been adding up. Which leads to my next point.

He isn't one of the most popular political figures on the planet. His approval ratings have been steadily dropping. The party was maintaining its lead in the polls, but even that cannot be said now. For a government, it doesn't matter if they kept their nose relatively clean over 3 1/4 years. What matter is during a election year they are now going to need to be campaigning with that hanging over them.

They shouldn't have booted her from the AG role, when they did, they shouldn't have suffled her to a minor post, after it hit the news they shouldn't have begun to smear her while she was being gagged, and after that they should have done everything in their power to starve the issue of any oxygen instead of giving her the national platform to destroy the credibility of the PM, his senior cabinet ministers and his senior staff. Issues management is a understatement.

Scheer is blessed and cursed by the same problem. The average canadian couldn't pick him out of a lineup, which means he struggles to gain traction but also means he can do whatever he wants without major scrutiny.

The only way he wins a election was for the liberals to implode and himself to be left standing.

The liberals complete and total mismanagement of this issue leaves scheer in said position. Even if/when the liberals bring up his obvious faults, it won't resonate. It will simply look like a deflection from their very public scandal. The liberals only hope has to be that JWR is done, actually done. Taken her pound of flesh and is now finally satisfied.

But I thought she was satisfied when butts resigned, but then yesterday happened. She's divorced from the PM, his senior cabinet ministers, his senior staff. She's a liberal, but with zero ****s given over what happens to the party. She's going to sleep every night saying the names of those who brought her downfall over and over again until they too are in the political wilderness. She doesnt look like she's a woman who's satisfied yet, and she may not be until she burns what she views as a corrupt PM down to the ground.

Every point I made was true. JT is quite popular on the international scene.

Here are my points again:

hell hath no fury,,,

Jodas went full on yesterday.

What I don't like though is people automatically saying she has to be believed because she is an indigenous woman. Who cares about that?

She cannot be trusted by colleagues now. You simply do not stab your bosses in the back like she did yesterday.

The press though doesn't have the balls to ask her point blank, so Jody, why if you felt so pressured and that even though you said it was not illegal, you were so upset, did you stay in cabinet? Are you the cause of the leak?

One theory is she told her old man who hates the Trudeaus and he was the source of the leak.

in what universe is Outremont an NDP stronghold? Yes, Mulcair has held it since 2007, but it was Liberal before that for 14 years. from 1968 - 2007 the Liberals lost the riding once. it is not an NDP stronghold.

-The Liberals continue to poll well in BC, Ontario, Eastern Canada and esp. Quebec.

the cons have passed the Libs in BC and closed the gap to within the margin of error in Ontario

-Last month Andrew Scheer demanded that the Liberals political interfere with the Tori Stafford case. So he's a hypocrite

Scheer may be the best thing the Libs have going for them.

-Harper would have demanded that the AG do what he says. It is now confirmed that Trudeau didn't ask her to do something. He asked her to consider the 9000 jobs that could be lost.

I think the 'but Harper' argument is an old one that should be retired now.

yeah, he's a dumdum

-There are 7 months until the elections and the Libs have been ahead in the polls for nearly the entire 3 years in power.

which makes the timing of this that much worse

-They have had no scandals until this. This scandal is unsexy and confusing to the average person.

I think you may be right here

-Scheer asking one of the most popular political figures on the planet to resign over this very silly.

while I dispute your characterization about Trudeau, your point here stands

I’d like to hear the conclusion of what she has to say. Unfortunately after yesterday I think there is little chance Trudeau will give her permission to tell exactly why she resigned from cabinate.

One thing this shows is that it would be best if the Solicitor General and Justice Minister were not the same person.

And to make it better the Canadian economy ground to a halt

if people have a job, they will be happy

In the end, if the country votes for a guy who stood on a platform with White Nationalists and whose suits do not fit, there is nothing we can do about it. We will lose any moral high ground compared to the USA.

It's a good thing he bent over backwards to be a feminist prime minister though...

He bent over for votes. All sizzle. No steak. The gloss wearing off was inevitable, but I didn’t think it would happen so quickly.

The best thing for the Libs moving forward is squeaking out a minority victory followed by a new leader like Freeland.
