New Canadian Politics Thread

He bent over for votes. All sizzle. No steak. The gloss wearing off was inevitable, but I didn’t think it would happen so quickly.

The best thing for the Libs moving forward is squeaking out a minority victory followed by a new leader like Freeland.

She is very impressive.

Yes, Trudeau is really falling apart. Its really shocking to say the least. However, the thought of Scheer as Prime Minister is frightening. Having Ford as my Premiere is not starting to effect my family in a negative way, having Scheer as P.M. would be a disaster.

I'd have some sympathy had he just said that he was appointing the best people for the job but he had to be a douche about it.

That said, I hope these strong principled women realize how much of a feminist PM Scheer would be, and in JWR case, how committed he would be to reconciliation.

Because the reason scheer has any chance now is due to them.

I agree.

Of course, the ultimate irony is that now the Cons who think women should not be allowed to choose, are saying, oh why are you fighting and disagreeing with a woman etc.

His only mistake was in moving Jodas from AG, should have kept her there. Once she was removed, she got pissed off, ran to daddy and he blabbed.

This is what rubs me the wrong way about liberals in general. The endless purity tests. Dont get me wrong I wish all voters held all politicians to an ongoing stress test for their vote but it just doesn't happen on the political right. There is a hard coded 30% in canada that vote on "values". This is how Harper pisses all over the country for a decade and maintains the same voter base he started with.

What is interesting to note is that neither of them have said they are quitting politics, they will still run as Liberals next election. That will make it interesting for Herr Scheer. He can call them reputable strong women, yet at the same time, he is then supporting a member of the opposing party.

Nah. The election will be about how Justin is a shallow doofus and a weak leader. Not too different from how they tried to beat him 4 yrs ago. But now they have more evidence to share with the public.

Looking back, the only way to get this done would be to keep JRW as justice minister, split the attorney general position into its own cabinet post and put someone there.

Instead he demoted her and she clearly decided that party unity be damned.

Word is Justin realizes the latest resignation was a game changer and will spend the next few days carefully drafting some sort of half assed apology (waiting for Butts and others to testify first)

But Theo Fleury ain't buying it.

@TheoFleury14
It’s to late to apologize!!!!!! When the scandal first broke that’s when you should’ve. Now means nothing. Just resign that’s the right thing to do. Stop trying to save the inevitable. You’re done!!!!!

I keep responding to his tweets telling him to stick to hockey

That reminds me of my favourite "stick to hockey" jab. I was in Philly watching the Raps play the Sixers in the playoffs during the Carter/Iverson years.

When Vince missed a shot, some idiots near me would yell "Stick to hockey Vince"

I'm not a Western-Canadian substance abuser, and I do generally end up supporting the Liberals in elections, and I honestly really wouldn't mind if Trudeau took a hike.

He has definitely served a purpose. His recognizable name and "star power", for lack of a better term, played a big role in leading the Liberal party out of the wilderness and ridding us of Harper.

But the man is definitely a bimbo, and he's picked up his share of baggage over the last few years. So to replace him as leader with someone with real competence and gravitas in their own right would be a big upgrade, and cut off a lot of the planned CPC attacks at the knees.

And Trudeau could really put all his "feminist" talk into action by handing off the leadership to a woman.

Yeah, got rid of Harper (though if Scheer fails don't be shocked if he tries to make a comeback) and legalized ganj. He's more or less served his purpose for me. At this point I care about someone being a reasonable steward to the economy, pushing forward on renewables and other green energy/climate change initiatives, and fixing the stupid legal ganj regulations we've put in place that are going to end up causing what should have been a juggernaut industry into a shitshow.

Whether that's Trudeau or not I really don't care. I know that the conservatives have no interest in either of the last two and as for the first on my list, have seem to adopted the "tax cuts for the rich" method of spurring an economy that their brethren to the south are so married to, so I have significant doubts that they're capable stewards anymore either.

Weren't you all saying Trudeau was a lock to beat scheer?

Still think he is, but minority is looking a lot more likely than it was before.

Scheer is pretty ****ing unlikeable and this is all fun and games until it's his mug on TV and at the debates. Quebec isn't buying him, even with the SNC Lavalin mess, and Ontario is barely buying him (and give Ford time to whittle away that conservative brand goodwill). There's some fertile ground for Trudeau to dig into when the election actually heats up on policy, especially again if Ford continues to dick around in Ontario with things like going after healthcare.

A big part of Scheers problem is the same thing he benefits from. He has no personal brand. Just another white guy from out west. He'll end up wearing some of the uglier aspects of provincial conservative policy in the minds of Ontario voters and if Trudeau can hold serve in Ontario and Quebec, a Trudeau minority because Scheer's best outcome.
