New Canadian Politics Thread

It's slim pickings in Canada. Not at all like the US where you have dozens of extremely livable large cities with lots of jobs and cool culture/vibe.

I don't know why everyone shits on Edmonton, I loved it when I visited. People are nice, some nice homes and malls to waste time in. I guess my personality type is drawn to that.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, only thing I hated was the sun not setting before 11pm in June which fucked up my sleep clock.
did you go downtown?

Totally fair. My only point was that Canada exists outside of Toronto and Vancouver.

#centreoftheuniverse

If you’re an nature/outdoorsy person then GTA, Vancouver and Montreal stink. I have numerous rellies/friends who are thriving in smaller communities and doing exactly what they want in life. Just need to be mindful that kiddos might leave…

Super bigly bad: GTA & Lower Mainland
Really bad: Victoria, Hamilton & Extended GHS+
Bad: Halifax, Ottawa, Montreal

Not sure about Calgary and other bits of Southern Ontario, such as London

Other areas are kinda OK. Maybe the Okanagan is bad, and pockets of recreational areas being influenced by cities (e.g. Prince Edward County.)

I think it's worse than even that....

This is just under 600K in North Bay

550K in Sudbury

Average income in that region is 45K a year, so you're around 35K afer taxes. Save 55K to get to 10 points down and you're at 2700+prop tax a month, so over 50% of their after tax before you've bought cars, paid for groceries, etc, etc, etc.

I think everywhere is just pretty broken right now aside from a few small pockets.

It's colder Hamilton with a big mall. It's surrounded by nothing of note for hours. A slightly more metropolitan Winnipeg.

Yeah I went to Edmonton earlier this year for the first time ever and wow I couldn't do it. Never really experienced a place that felt more like literal doom and gloom. I've been to Calgary in the past. Still not for me but it was a bit more pleasant. You get what you pay for, there's a reason these places are cheap.

Wehave lives here :p

It's a fine City. Nothing special. Only thing I really wish it had was the Jays. I find a lot of ppl say it isn't like Toronto! And then those people do nothing in Toronto that makes it better than other cities.

River valley is spectacular (especially in the winter), tons of awesome events in the summer that we take in (taste of Edmonton, heritage days, folkfest, fringe, etc), concerts (even though I'm a bit old for that now), outdoor rinks, golfing, and stuff. Winter weather can be a bit much especially with the shorter golf season than say my brother has in Baden.

I love the 11 pm sunset. Golfing 18 holes after work is nice. Of course the 5pm sunset in December sucks. Hate the malls!

Lived in Calgary for a bunch of years and it was fine. Boring, but fine. Way better than Edmonton though.

Curious what you did here.

That is quite a nice house for 600k. Is North Bay a shit hole or something?

Yes and I'm from Montreal. It was nice. No asshats like in Montreal.
we clearly prioritize different things in downtowns lol.

I lived and worked in Edmonton for a few months and downtown was basically a ghost town (aside from public intoxication) after like 5 pm... (among other complaints)

Calgary was the same. I lived right in the downtown core for a couple of years and it was solid, but shit died a painful death after 5-6pm on weekdays. Complete ghost town aside from a few small neighbhourhoods that had a bit of life.
