New Canadian Politics Thread

Lots of nice in Canada, but not sure the bang for the buck makes sense if you don't have to for work or family.

I don’t think I’ll ever move out of Ontario, let alone out of Canada altogether.

Love both the city and northern Ontario. I’m close with my family & circle of friends, and this is where they all are.

And I would be absolutely miserable living in any place that has a tropical climate year-round, so our weather isn’t even a negative for me.

We'd move but it's too hard with family. More likely when kids grown up and elderly parents have passed away.

I'm lucky as things like that go. Kids weren't in the cards for us, and my parents are just hitting retirement age and are looking to buy a vacay spot in Vallarta as close to where wifey and I build as possible so they can spend 4-5 months of the year near us and then the good weather months back in Canada.

When we did our math a few years ago it just made no sense to stay. Our savings buy us a nice spot down there in cash with a fair bit left over, our personal skill sets transfer anywhere, she's a citizen and I qualify for fast track permanent residency by marriage to her. So it was either keep paying a yuge mortgage in Ontario with all of that equity locked away, or unlock the equity, buy a place with it in cash and go mortgage free. We also own revenue generating commercial property in Guadalajara that is a pain in the ass to manage remotely, so it just makes more sense for us to be mortgage free and live a 2 hr drive from that instead of thousands a month in mortgage payment for a few more decades, pay someone 12% to manage our property and still have to fly down there whenever something major comes up.

It's a unique situation for sure, your mileage may vary. Anyone intent on staying for whatever reason though I strongly suggest investing every spare penny in the American markets, and living within your means. I don't see the affordability problems getting any better here short of a massive tidal change in public sentiment and politics.

I'm the super duper Scottish/Ukie combustible in the sun kind of white and even I struggle to believe anyone actually feels this way.

Fuck everything about November to March. Everything.
November and even December can be quite nice, arguably perfect! January and February is mostly hell though, I'll give you that. And I say that as someone who actually doesn't mind the cold or the outdoors in the cold/snow (I can deal with it far better than unbearable heat/humidity). It's fine in small doses but it's a long two months.

You get shit winters in southern Ontario, frankly. I’m in a different climate belt, which gets real snow and real cold. It’s great when it’s not life threatening. 🙂

I hate March for weather though. Ugh.

Honestly used to believe this, and then a bungalow in bedroom community started going for 800K with stagnating wages.

With receipts from my general neighbourhood:

Seriously...it's fine, but there's still a ton of non upgraded original build there on a 20 yr old house. 2000sq is okay, but hardly big or premium either.

And it can be yours, with 10% down for 3800 a month + CMHC & property tax or if you're one of the lucky ones who can do half down or similar, 2100 a month.

Yeah, I'll be in Mexico.

Timing and location are so important (and personal circumstances, obviously.) Millennials in the GTA or Vancouver? ouf

Anyway, we’re OK here - but not so sure about the kids…

(And we do have an escape plan for shitty, shitty March. 🙂)
