New Canadian Politics Thread

i still think re: healthcare that the cons in this province are purposely starving the public healthcare system so yes, limit immigration to reasonable levels but we'd still have big time issues there regardless imo
yah two separate issues IMO.

our healthcare system has just been neglected for decades and is in really rough shape. the influx of newcomers adds to the stress, but is not the root cause or only issue. there are many systemic problems.

and then the influx of immigrants putting strain on our housing, infrastructure, etc. is a separate issue.

read a piece in the Globe recently that resonated - talking about how one of JT's lasting accomplishments is to undermine the Canadian consensus on immigration that had held up for decades. sad, but I agree.

The most major issues: housing and Healthcare are both primarily provincial directed issues? But the blame is going to the feds?

Just looking at ontario, if dougie hadn't pocketed the billions the feds gave us for covid health improvements how much better off would we be?

so healthcare, I'd say yeah, mostly the provinces.

housing is complicated. it is technically provincial jurisdiction. but I'd like to see the data regarding how/whether the influx of immigrants (federal jurisdiction) had any impact on the housing crisis. could easily see there being a straight line from A to B here.

and then affordability is also a huge issue, and the feds get blamed for that, rightly or wrongly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... residential properties being bought up by corporations is the biggest issue housing faces. Restrict or heavily tax short term rentals and don't allow corporations to buy or own residential properties and we would see a major shift.

Yep. I’m sure immigration and the flood of international students and temporary foreign workers is having an impact on rent & property sizes as well.

But the biggest problem is the huge corporations snapping up all of the homes, or individuals who make their living off an ever-increasing portfolio of rental properties.

Corporations should be banned outright from owning single-family homes. And individuals/families should be capped at a maximum of two properties. Or, at least, the taxes on any additional properties beyond one primary residence and one vacation home should be prohibitively expensive.

so I'm legit not sure if banning corps from home ownership would be a provincial or federal thing. think it's provincial.

lol. they're flailing now too.

dunno wtf Carney is thinking though... if he had leadership ambitions, this ought to effectively kill them off.

in fairness, he was never gonne win a general election anyways, so may be for the best.

Yeah, I’m kind of confused by this move on both sides. Seems like a terrible decision to tie yourself to Trudeau at this point if you have future ambitions in the Liberal party.

And then if you’re Justin, what’s the idea here? Keep your enemies close? I dunno.
