New Canadian Politics Thread

but for the Bloc, having such a party running the country, as odd as it might sound, helps their drive for sovereignty or so they think as Quebecois are a tad more left than much of the country. I don't agree with the Bloc on policy but I have to respect that they are honest, they only care about how legislation affects la Belle Province

Yeah, I agree with the notion that the Bloc won’t necessarily be too fussed about the risk of a party that’s less ideologically aligned with them ending up in power. Since the Quebec electorate being more alienated by their federal government plays into their long-term goals.

Still though, it’s not necessarily easy to have your hands on the levers of power and then give that up to go back to sitting in the audience.

the two conservative parties hated each other as well.

Sure. But despite all the guardrails that were put in place, that “merger” quickly ended up turning into the smaller party being wholly consumed and shat out by the larger party.

Hardly an encouraging historical example to follow if you’re the NDP.

not sure the current state of the NDP is an encouraging example to follow if you're the NDP.

conservative party merged because they knew they were fucked if they didn't.

with the current political makeup, it's about to happen to the left.

I'm not so sure that the problem is remotely as dire as it was for the right. Yes, when the right recipe is there, the CPC can secure a win and maybe even a small majority. But it's always going to be temporary, even with a divided left.

I think it was wolfman, or whatever his monicker was, who said NDP are CPC members were drawn from working class folks and the Libs were white collar.

The Libs don’t need the far left to win. Hell they’d probably win this one if they replace Justin with anyone other that Freeland.

The real problem is there is only one serious party because the libs can’t win forever.

Yep. Replace Trudeau with someone credible from outside Trudeau’s inner circle, and the turnaround in the polls is probably at least as dramatic as the Biden/Harris switcheroo.

Unfortunately though, we don’t have our own equivalent to Nancy Pelosi to apply the needed pressure to get him to step aside. And I don’t think Trudeau possesses the selflessness or introspection required to recognize himself as a problem and put his country’s best interests ahead of his own pride and ambition.

I think the only way he leaves is if he’s forced out following a crushing election loss and Poilievre majority.
