in my anecdotal experience, friends/family are having medical issues and aren’t able to get in to see a doctor in a timely manner.

Yeah, this is completely divorced from the reality of care in the province. Getting a family doctor is difficult, and getting in to see them when you have one just doesn't work for a lot of issues...

A couple of months ago I picked up an ear infection but didn't realize it was an ear infection, thought that I had done something to fuck my jaw up a bit. So I do what most people do, take pain killers and wait to see if the pain in my jaw fucks off. A few days pass and I call to book in with the family doctor, they're booking into the following week. Cool, book the appointment. 2 days later wake up in the middle of the night, heavy pressure in my ears, significant pain. Go to ER, both ear canals open just barely enough to get drops into, anti biotic drops for 2 weeks to clear it up. Did I need the ER? No, that's definitely one of the 50% of the cases an ER doctor would say did not require ER care....and I wouldn't have been there if I could have gotten into my family doc in 2 days instead of 5+ with the alternative being sitting in a walk in clinic for 1-2 hours.

Can't pharmacists prescribe antibiotic drops for ear and eye infections now? I occasionally use some online service where you pay $60-80 or something to get a doctor to prescribe you stuff. Entirely worth it when the other option is to wait 19 hours in the ER. I think it used to be covered by ohip but since that went away, you can get appointments right away.

Kiddo had a clear case of croup recently, I knew what he needed (I'm dr presto after all) so I messaged a doctor on there and got the medication from the pharmacy within 2 hours. Recovered almost immediately.

Maybe, dunno. I didn't realize it was an ear infection until the night I went to the ER. Had no inner ear discomfort or hearing issues at all, everything was in my jaw so even if they can I wouldn't have thought to go.

Also how many people still technically have q family doc but it's an hour away (either the one they had as a kid and they live far away or vice versa).

Yeah, that’s me. Live downtown and family doc is way out in the burbs.

I’ve never even attempted to find one closer to home. Both because I assume it’d be impossible, and because of how good my doc is. If I want to book a regular checkup, sure, it’d have to be for months in the future.

But if I ever call them with something like ME’s scenario, they almost always find a way to fit me in within a day or two.

What Dougie wants. People paying out of pocket for what govt should be able to provide for free.

Don’t blame you at all, just wish the system did its job better

Yeah I had a tick bite yesterday and got antibiotics for it at the drug store so they can prescribe minor stuff. And that was a good change imo but making it also kinda acknowledges the problems that are making people go to the ER that getting in quick to a family doctor might help alleviate.

Yup. Not saying it's a good thing. But just giving a tip if you value your time at more than $20/hour and you know what treatment you need. Sometimes paying some online doc is the best option unfortunately.

Which is excessively sad as they are an "online doc" for a reason.

Trudeau’s troops must be getting restless. My local MP canvassers were knocking at my door today asking if he could count on my support.
